Oh yeah, no doubt that there was TREMENDOUS significance historically and culturally for Greece to have the Olympics after in 108 years (1896, the start of the Olympics modern era)...

You'd think because of that historical significance that outside parties would've helped fund things, but maybe they have. I dunno. It seems to have turned into a business rather than a celebration, though. And that's sad. I'm sure the business side was the motivator in staggering the winter and summer Olympics, where before they were lock step in the same year...

I think that pretty much called sponsorship. The winter olympics never drew the same interest as the summer so I don't think staggering it made a different. Perhaps they thought it would originally. Winter Olympics will become popular if we enter an ice age, other than that only select countries can really participate.

I like the Winter Olympics. And that's saying something, since I'm so gung-ho about summer weather... Smile

And the Winter Olympics doesn't have those fluff "sports" like synchronized swimming and rhythmic gymnastics... Although ice dancing comes mighty close....

hatakekakashi081 had a similar problem when the political thread was created. That's why there was two, until I deleted one.

yep, same problem again. I edited the post after I had already made the poll, but then it was gone when I looked at the message. So, I created another poll, and of course, there's now two options. But that's exactly how I wanted it! So no problem. Mad Could one of the admins or moderators possibly fix that so there's only one set of options, then people won't have to be seeing double anymore, and I won't be going twice as crazy with this board.

I never created a thread with a poll before so I don't really know how it works. Even before I deleted the other political thread (the first one you made before the revised one), I tried to fool around with the poll edit options, but I just couldn't figure it out.

I think I'll try to create a test thread right now and I'll try to fool around with it. Of course, I'll delete it after. If it's a success, I'll fix this one for you too.

Got it!

If you're going to change the options in the poll in anyway, you have to click in the "Delete Poll" box. Then re do the poll all over again. If you edit the existing poll, it'll double up.

Did you not see the poll the first time around because you hit the "Preview" button rather than the "Submit" button? If so, then that explains why you didn't see the poll first time around.

I fixed it for you, but at the same time, all the previous votes had been erased. Sorry, that's something I couldn't control.

Well i'm have mixed feeling for Beijing 2008

Of course we are sur that verything will be great, beautifull, perfect dance, millions of people in stadiums dancing together with beautifull colors...

But on the other hand, don't forget that China doesn't respect human rights.. killing people by thousand each year in stadium, and make the family pay the bullet !
They are not free to say what they want to say, they can't leave their country easily...
We'll see a beautifull face of China, and we'll forget the other face with people not leaving in Beijing or Shangai, or Hong Kong...

Your point is correct, but I think you have to keep the two things separate: the politics and the sport.

From a positive standpoint, having the games there might help the situation... It surely won't hurt it. Smile

I agree, I also think China is seriously trying to improve it's image to the world and that it does want to be the number 1 economic country in the world. To do that people have to feel they can invest in China and not be killed or held as a political prisoner. I expect China will greatly improve on it's human rights over the next several years.

From what I've read (other peoples' opinions, so I have no facts to back it up), I heard that China is like the "next Japan". Economy is booming and they are taking steps in the same direction as Japan had once did.
It'll be a slow process, but I think China will improve to become the next economic power.
