Man who stayed for 2 months at comic book cafe without paying arrested for fraud
NAGAOKA, Niigata -- A man who stayed at a comic book cafe for nearly two months and escaped without paying 520,000 yen for his stay and drinks he ordered has been arrested, police said.
Kentaro Shimada, 33, a jobless man of no fixed address, is accused of fraud. Police are grilling him over the motives behind his crime.
Shimada stayed in a private room of a comic cafe in Nagaoka, where customers can read comic books while drinking cafe or tea, from Aug. 2 to Sept. 26, and escaped without paying 520,000 yen for his use of the room and the 140 drinks he ordered, local police said.
Whenever an employee demanded payment, he avoided doing so by saying he would pay later, according to investigators. (Mainichi)

Strange. How could he stay there for so long ? I think I got the impression that he even slept there. _________________

that's a very good question! i would like to know the answer to that myself...that is an awfully large tab to run up...i wish the article was a bit more detailed but it's funny and strange nonetheless.

not sure what the exact ratings were for Densha Otoko, but they must've been extremely high, one of the most popular dramas of 2005...

article from the Mainich Daily News
========================================
Maid cafes get 'yellow cards' for going too far with customers
Two female workers dressed in a maid outfits are pictured at a popular "maid cafe." Photo not related to article.
FUKUOKA -- Police issued instructions to two "maid cafes" in Fukuoka, telling the establishments they were in danger of violating the Law Regulating Adult Entertainment Businesses over their treatment of customers, it has been learned.
The two establishments have applied to the Fukuoka Prefectural Public Safety Commission for operating licenses under the law.
"We understand that there has not been any illegal activity," a representative of one of the cafes said. "We have planned dinner parties and other events, and we filed applications as a precaution because we didn't want to violate any laws."
Maid cafes have begun to spring up across Japan fuelled by the "Moe boom," based on otaku-like obsessions with Japanese anime characters and the like. Police and cafe workers say maid cafes feature female waitresses dressed up as maids with frilly aprons and ribbons. They refer to customers as "my lord," or "my lady," and provide them with such service as drawing words or marks they like on their food with ketchup.
The first of the two stores in Fukuoka opened in August this year, becoming the first maid cafe in Kyushu. The second one opened soon afterwards. One of the stores operates a VIP services for an entry fee of 2,000 yen, advertising entertainment with maids on its Web site.
Under the Law Regulating Adult Entertainment Businesses, operating licenses are required for establishments such as cafes when they amuse or "wine and dine" customers. Police said they told the stores that having waitresses sit next to customers to respond to their requests could fall under "entertainment" restricted by the law, rather than ordinary customer "service." I started watching this drama when I was in Japan and I liked it a lot and told everyone about it. I was amazed there were a lot of other people who liked it too ^_^. I didn't get to finish it though because I came back to America. However I was able to download up to epp 09. (epp 10 is downloading now) This series usually makes me cry. Maybe because I understand how an otaku lives I can relate to densha otoko. I feel that Hermes should have let him explane. Oh I bet it will all work out in the end. HURRY UP AND FINISH DOWNLOADING!
I want to be part of a thread like that. I should go back to 2chan more often. -_- _________________ ԍD́BBB[uIOQO
