I don't mind at all that people use a mix of basic Japanese and English. Actually I kind of like it. Just like when watching J Drama. Japanese often use an English word or two like Thank you, or cool etc. mixed in with Japanese, so why should we not feel free we toss in a Japanese word or two?

Is the fear that this may lead to a world similar to what was portrayed in the movie "Blade runner"? Where people spoke a mishmash of languages?

This seems the correct place for people to be able to use a little Japanese if they know it. I would not think it appropriate to use on non Japanese related websites but hey that's just my 2 cents worth.

No, what I meant was, I was expecting quite a lot of negative responses, but also maybe at least one agreeing with me, or some completely different opinion.

Oh, okay. I'm guessing people (like me) are indifferent to the whole thing. Heck I incorporate Japanese into my posts.

Same here. I guess that's what some people are carping about.

I think Kamesan would probably hate living in Hawaii. Over here everyone mixes up the languages, especially the older generation. Everyone picks up on words from other languages and usually incorporate it into their own conversations without really thinking about it.

I myself have used Japanese, Chinese, even Filipino words sometimes! It just has to do with being around so many different ethnic people and being able to share and appreciate other cultures IMO.

small price to pay, to live in a place with such good waves...

but i think in a LOT of industrialized countries, there are a fair amount of mixing of words/languages. that's just a natural by-product of international trade.

i agree, moreover, english is the language of the dominant popular culture as portrayed in some of the most widely viewed entertainment programs in the world, which hail from america.

so everybody start mixing words and we can all start rapping in a new mongrel tongue and convince the masses it sounds cool and make millions of dollars selling records.....it will work i tell you!!!

I usually speak Cambodian and toss some English when i'm speaking to my Cambodian friends. Chinese on the other hand ahaha I only know hwo to swear and say simply stuf like "I don't understand" "I do understand "Hi how are you?" "How are you teacher" Thank you and stuff.
I also can speak other languages ;D but not fluent XDDDD except for Cambodian and English

Anyways about this topic, Hahaha sometimes when people do the "Japanglish" Sometimes it gets annoying or makes me mad bcus I can't really understand the word or words they are trying to say

For christ sake, if you just HAVE TO add something like that, try using "right?" or "don't you think?". "minna"/"minnasan" etc. - You know... I've even seen this thrown in around the place in KANJI... In the middle of an ENGLISH paragraph... I mean, seriously... "gomen" - Most people are never happy with this, so it usually becomes "gomen ne". "kawaii" - I've never seen that word written as much in romaji as I have in these forums, "She's really kawaii ne!". I'm sorry, NO she isnt 'kawaii', but she's CUTE, yeah. (apologies to anyone who is unaware of the meaning of the word "cute", because I get the feeling there are a few). "arigatou"/"arigato" - For some reason this one pisses me off the least, although it still does... I could go on forever, but these are the ones that come to mind straight away. Shintaro Ishihara is known in Japan for his outspoken remarks
A group of French speakers in Japan are suing the governor of Tokyo after he described French as a failed language.
The 21 teachers and researchers are demanding compensation and an apology for the "insulting remarks" from Governor Shintaro Ishihara.

Mr Ishihara is accused of saying he was not surprised French did not qualify as an international language, as it was "a language which cannot count numbers".

The veteran politician is well-known for his outspoken comments.

He has previously drawn criticism for saying the Nanjing Massacre, in which hundreds of thousands of Chinese were slaughtered by Japanese troops in the 1930s, never happened.

His latest controversial comments came during the inauguration of a university building last October. Among the audience were French professors who had opposed his government's integration of five schools to form Tokyo Metropolitan University.

"I have to say that it should be no surprise that French is disqualified as an international language because French is a language which cannot count numbers," he said.

French contribution

Numbers in French can be complicated for beginners, especially combinations which make up numbers such as 94, which translates as "four 20s and 14".

The group taking Mr Ishihara to court, who include French and Japanese nationals, are seeking a written apology and 500,000 yen (&pound;2,545; 3,683 euros) each. They say his comments "hindered their economic livelihoods".

Brendan Marcus, who teaches at a private French school in Tokyo, is one of the plaintiffs.

"For someone of his public stance, it's quite unacceptable," Mr Marcus told Reuters news agency.

"When you know how many French scientists and mathematicians throughout history have made important [his remarks are] not appropriate."
