Women who imitate the look of model Ebihara Yuri.

"Ebi-chan" is the nickname of Ebihara Yuri, a model for CanCam, currently Japan's top-selling women's fashion magazine, who has also appeared in TV commercials and dramas. Using pink and white as her base colors, Ebihara coordinates her outfits to create a cute look intended to make men want to take care of her. Her style, which appeals strongly to men, has become extremely popular among young women. The OLs ("office ladies," meaning female office workers) who mimic this look are known as Ebi-chan OLs.

The clothes worn by Ebihara on the pages of CanCam often sell out soon after the magazine is released. Fans of Ebi-chan say that as a model, her style is easier to emulate than those of television personalities. One of the features of her fans is that they like not only her fashion sense but also the way she smiles - everything about her in fact. (May 1, 2006)

i don't think ALL of them do...i guess it depends on exactly what they do...i've seen doramas where the OLs don't have uniforms

Only saw a few secretaries without uniforms in dramas, but I guess that could be true for the rest of them too. Even the school kids in Jyoou no Kyoushitsu wear their regular clothes in class.

It's kind of funny that the girls like her style in the magazine. She could have a completly different look in real life. The clothes she wears are chosen by someone else. She does have the simple, but elegant look.

your observations are very astute..my impression comes from Anego (don't know if you've seen it or not) but the OLs there do NOT wear uniforms.

in any case i agree...i'm sure her look IS cultivated by OTHERS...but i guess when it comes to media and mass marketing ppl are very gullible....especially in Japan..i've read many pieces about that, in particular

Not yet. I don't have it, but I think I saw the DVD set somewhere and it was affordable.

i haven't seen Anego...but i didn't know the OL's in that j-drama didn't wear any uniforms..

the marketers in Japan are very smart at getting the YEN rolling and people to be captivated by the media-marketing, and it helps that they use a gorgeous model like Yuri.

i guess it all depends at what "level" those OLs are...you feel me...some are more than merely administrative assistants...

of course i agree with you...the better looking, the sexier, the more that person sells whatever product....it's the same the world over.
