The lights go out today on Samsung's prizewinning display at Shibuya crossing. It's been up since 2002 when Korea-Japan jointly hosted the World Cup but the cancellation of the contract represents the final step in the electronic giant's withdrawal from the Japanese consumer market.

There is no Imperial Japanese government. It was removed in 1945. And, no offense Tu_triky, given the crimes by elements of the Imperial Japanese Army in Korea, plus the forceful occupation and oppression of the country, I don't think it's funny. But that's my opinion.
But should those allegations prove to be true, then the elections in Iwakuni are decided. Actually, I think they might already be decided, thanks to this crime (even if he "just" kissed her, he a) behaved completely wrong -she's 14, you don't kiss 14 year old girls when you're that old- and b) dishonored his uniform). The anti-base candidate might win anyway. _________________

Japan successfully launches high-speed Internet Satellite
TOKYO (AFP) - Japan successfully launched Saturday an experimental satellite aimed at providing high-speed Internet access across Asia, even when terrestrial infrastructure goes down, the space agency said.
The domestically developed H-2A rocket carrying the Kizuna satellite was launched at 17:55 pm (0855 GMT) with no glitches from the Space Centre on Tanegashima island off the southern tip of Kyushu Island, southern Japan.
The communications satellite, expected to be in use for five years, separated from the rocket approximately 35 minutes after the launch, said an official of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) during a live broadcast.
The 342 million dollar-Kizuna will allow super-high speed data communications of up to 1.2 Gbps, which would make it the fastest in the world, the agency said.
That rate would translate to 150 times that of the average high-speed ADSL connection rate of 8 Mbps, or 12 times the speed of a fibre-optic communication delivery to a person's premises (FTTP).
The "Kizuna," which also means "bond" in Japanese, is expected to begin transmitting and receiving data with terrestrial infrastructures in July after completing preparations and confirming the satellite's safety.
Japan is looking to use the satellite to allow communication when a ground-based network is severed by a disaster in any Asian country, in which case it would be used to transmit data to crisis management offices.
The agency is hoping it can also be used as an educational or medical tool to reach people in remote or mountainous areas.

A microbrewery in Abashiri City, Hokkaido has developed a new happoshu called Ryuhyo Draft using water from melted ice floes (hence the X in the name) and pigment from local seaweed to give it a blue hue. I wonder if it tastes better than Hotate (scallop) Draft?

Very fashion - they must have spend sooo much money for those clips: getting über-style icons Patricia Field and Orlando Pita on board, paying for the music producer and all the samples of songs... a tad too perfect for my taste

but dang, she's such a diva. she's got the moves too. even Ayumi has never pulled off a PV like this. the whole package is awsome. and you can see the significant difference between the 60, 70, and 80's song and fashion. too bad none of them are her own songs. but still...
In the What a Feeling PV in the red oufit she kinda looks like Madonna in her young days (even better ) _________________

US Marine accused of rape in Japan
By CHISAKI WATANABE, Associated Press Writer
Japanese police on Monday arrested a U.S. Marine accused of raping a 14-year-old girl in southern Japan, but the suspect denied the allegation, police said.
Police took custody of Tyrone Luther Hadnott, 38, of Camp Courtney in Okinawa, an Okinawa police official said on condition of anonymity citing policy. Hadnott's hometown was not immediately available. He has not been charged.
In 1995, the rape of a schoolgirl in Okinawa by three American servicemen sparked large-scale protests. The three served prison terms of six and a half to seven years.
Officials of U.S. Forces in Japan could not immediately confirm the latest case. Under a mutual security pact, the United States has about 50,000 troops deployed around Japan. Most of them are based on Okinawa and tensions over potential accidents, land use and troop-related crimes are common.
The suspect, a Marine staff sergeant, is alleged to have offered to take the girl to her home on his motorbike on Sunday, but then took her to his house instead, another local police official told The Associated Press.
When the girl started crying, he said he would drive her home, but he is accused of then raping her in a car, the official said, also speaking on condition of anonymity in line with policy.
Hadnott told investigators he forced the girl down and kissed her, but that he did not rape her, the official said.
Since no one updated... The girl declined to press charges, and the charges were dropped by Japanese law enforcement. US military is still investigating the incident.

In other news, U.S. airman arrested for trespassing in Okinawa despite curfew
NAHA \ Police arrested a U.S. Air Force serviceman Sunday on suspicion of trespassing in a private office in Okinawa Prefecture, despite a curfew imposed on all U.S. military and civilian personnel in the prefecture since Feb 20.
The round-the-clock curfew on all U.S. soldiers and their relatives on the southern island of Okinawa, and Iwakuni in western Japan, was ordered in an effort to stem public anger over a series of incidents.
The U.S. military is expected to decide later Monday whether to extend the curfew.
In the latest incident, the U.S. airman, Wesley Taft of Kadena Air Base, is suspected of breaking the glass door of an office of the Okinawa Contractors Association in the city of Okinawa and entering the office around 6:40 a.m. Sunday.
A security guard, who arrived at the office after its alarm was set off, called the police. Taft, holding an iron pipe, was arrested around 200 meters from the office about an hour later.
Taft's breath smelled of alcohol and he told police that he had crawled through the fence of Camp Shields. The office is located near the fence.who had been drinking, was arrested on Sunday for allegedly leaving his base and trespassing into the office of a local association representing construction firms.
"He has admitted to have climbed over the fence at the base," an Okinawa police spokesman said. "He smashed the glass door with a steel pipe."
In a separate incident, Manuel Taitano, a 42-year-old worker at the Kadena base, was arrested Saturday for alleged use of an illegal drug at an off-base house, police said.source _________________

Footwear fetish thief used boot odor to fantasize about owners
The 27 pairs of women's boots confiscated from Watanabe's home and car.KITAKYUSHU -- A man arrested for stealing dozens of pairs of women's boots has told investigators that he smelled them to imagine what the women who wore them looked like, police said.
Kazuhiro Watanabe, 33, from Okagaki, Fukuoka Prefecture, admitted to the allegations of theft during questioning. "I got excited when I smelled them and fantasized over what the women who wore them looked like," Watanabe was quoted as telling investigators.
In the specific case for which he was arrested, Watanabe stole a pair of boots belonging to a 42-year-old woman, worth 5,000 yen, from a sports club in Yahatahigashi-ku, Kitakyushu, on Feb. 22, local police said.
Investigators confiscated 27 pairs of women's boots from his home and car. Local police said they suspect that he stole the boots from hospitals and sports clubs while on his way home from work over the past few years.
