Man arrested for attempted extortion from Ayumi Hamasaki
Sat, February 13, 2010 (12:38pm EST)
On Friday, Shibuya police arrested a man who had sent a threatening letter to the home of pop singer Ayumi Hamasaki (31). The suspect, 42-year-old Motoyoshi Fujii, is being charged with attempted extortion. Fujii has reportedly admitted to the crime.
In late December, Fujii sent the letter to Hamasaki's home, though an Avex staff member checked it first before the singer could read it. At first glance, it appeared to be a fan letter, containing words of praise for Hamasaki and other artists. However, the letter also demanded that 500 million yen be deposited into a designated bank account, or else the home of Avex president Max Matsuura (45) would be burned down. Fujii wrote that this was under the orders of his gang's boss.
The staff passed the letter on to Matsuura, who filed a claim with the police in January. Investigators easily traced the letter to Fujii, as it included his name and address and was postmarked in his city.
Police are currently working to determine whether Fujii was responsible for several other similar letters that had been sent to Hamasaki and Matsuura since last fall. They are also investigating how he obtained Hamasaki's address.
What kind of an idiot sends an exortion letter with his name and address!??!

Osaka Tragedy
There's been strange turn of events in an Osaka murder case. A chef had made a series of poor investments which left him 5 million yen in debt. Unable to deal with the shame, he killed his wife and two children before trying to commit suicide by slashing his wrists in an internet cafe. He failed and is in police custody. To make the tragedy worse, investigators have now discovered that his wife, through her own efforts, had a secret savings account with 20 million yen which she was planning to use to send the children to university. The husband said that his relationship with his wife had deteriorated and he hadn't told her about his debts and didn't know about her savings.

6.9 Earthquake hits off the coast of Japan
TOKYO – A magnitude 6.9 earthquake hit off Japan's southern coast early Saturday, shaking Okinawa and nearby islands, where a tsunami warning was briefly issued, Japan's Meteorological Agency said.
The quake occurred off the coast of the island of Okinawa at a depth of 6.2 miles (10 kilometers) at 5:31 a.m. Saturday (2031 GMT Friday), the agency said.
There have been no reports of major damage or casualties so far, except for reports of ruptured water pipes in two locations, Okinawa police official Noritomi Kikuzato said.
The Meteorological Agency had initially predicted a tsunami up to 6 feet (2 meters) near the Okinawan coast, warning nearby residents to stay away from the coastline. The agency later lifted the warning within two hours after observing only a small swelling of tide.
Ryota Ueno, a town official in the Nishihara district of Okinawa, said, "I was fast asleep when the quake hit, and I jumped out of bed. It felt like the shaking lasted forever."
There was no major damage in his house, and he then rushed to the town office to meet up with his colleagues and stand by in case of reports of damage from residents, Ueno told a telephone interview with public broadcaster NHK.
So far, only one resident in the town reported a ruptured water pipe, but no other damage reported, he said.
Masaaki Nakasone, another official at he Nanjo town, said his house shook violently but all furniture and other objects stayed intact.
"First there was a vertical shaking, then the house swayed sideways," Nakasone said.

A strange case of discrimination
Japanese owned sushi restaurant catering to Americans discriminates against Japanese customers.
"the Japanese owner had worked in America and on his return to Okinawa he set up a restaurant making American style sushi that would be popular with Americans on the island. Japanese customers however demanded Japanese style sushi, and made negative comments about the American customers when talking in Japanese.
It appears that to create a comfortable atmosphere for his American clients, the owner decided to make the restaurant a private club. Entry to the restaurant is free for Americans, Japanese have to pay 100,000 yen to join. A Japanese woman is allowed into the restaurant without paying the membership fee if she is escorted by an American. All Japanese men have to pay the membership fee."
Most of coastal Japan is bracing for a possible tsunami. Hope we don't get nothing more than a few feet. I'm still gonna go shopping for new running shoes.
