Yeah I agree niko-chan. Smile Cicadas make a beautiful summer sound. Between the sound of cicadas and the sight of summer lightning bugs or fire flies that is summer nature at its best. Big Grin

Japanese House-Sitter Robot Hits Stores

By HIROKO TABUCHI, Associated Press Writer
Tue Aug 23, 7:09 AM ET

Worried about leaving your house empty while you go on vacation? Japan has the answer: a house-sitter robot armed with a digital camera, infrared sensors and a videophone.

Stores across Japan started taking orders on Thursday for the Roborior — a watermelon-sized eyeball on wheels that glows purple, blue and orange — continuing the country's love affair with gadgets.

Roborior can function as interior decor, but also as a virtual guard dog that can sense break-ins using infrared sensors, notify homeowners by calling their cellular phones, and send the owner's cell phone videos from its digital camera.

It debuted in department stores this week, but supplies are limited. The robot is on display in a half-dozen shops, though many more are taking orders.

"We've had robots before that were just toys, but the Roborior can actually be put to practical use in the home," said Takako Sakata, a spokeswoman for the department store chain Takashimaya.

Such technology doesn't come cheaply. Takashimaya will sell the machines, developed by Japanese robot maker Tmsuk Co. Ltd. and electronics company Sanyo Electric Co. Ltd., for $2,600 each.

"We received a lot of inquiries after the demonstrations," Sakata said. "Our initial plan is to sell 2,000 robots."

Tmsuk has already produced a four-legged security robot called Banryu, which is about the size of a large dog and sells for $18,000.

PostPosted: Fri Aug 26, 2005 11:46 am    Post subject: higher education in nippon Reply with quote Back to top

hi, everyone, i'm a newbie here. glad to join this remarkable community of dorama lovers Big Grin . i've decided to start this "education in nippon" topic, just to connect anyone who is interested in studying in japan, whether in junior colleges, speciallized colleges, unis, graduate schools etc, with people who are (or were) studying in japan or who are well versed with the institutions there. maybe you guys can share your experiences in institutions in japan or, for prospective students like me, to clear any doubts on the student life there, which unis to go, jap language course, uni entrance exam etc. have fun!

that's a good thought... thank you very much

as for me, I do want to further my studies in Japan, I wish to take engineering course over there... but it's hard to determine which uni(s) suit me well....

I've selected a few unis and have sent email to the assigned professor but none of them have reply... I was told in order to get an admission as a graduate in any uni(s) i need to have a professor from that uni accepting to be my supervisor.... and none the less... my japanese language profiency is poor... so this makes things difficult...

any advice from anyone about how to structure my emails to the professor... what do i have to attach together with my emails... and none the less any uni recommendation... heheheh

thanx again for creating this thread Mr Green

Perhaps this should have been posted in the Learn Japanese forum as the contents to follow will be about Japanese language education?

Moved.
