I know in the past Japanese women often flushed the toilet non stop or ran water in the sink to cover any embarising noise. This is less common today but still happens. Some company's came up with features that would create noise. I never heard that called appreciate button before though...

Some toilets spray a perfume and I have a feeling that may be what they are refering too to help cover odor.

yah I heard u can press a button now and u'll have running water sound to cover any embaressing sounds u may make....and I think I heard in Japan, when they say byebye, they stand there and wave to u till u disappear from their sight.....and it's very very rude to make the "tsk" sound in Japan....(which I always do when I'm irritated)

What a shock, if they were here. About 1 of out 5 person on the sidewalk is eats a 1$ pizza slice night and day. Sweat

I think I've read somewhere that there was a toilet (Toto I think) with something that record the sound and play the inverse of this sound so you can't hear anything.

Also received this the other day from the Gadget watch newletter.
Name: Toto Apricot N5A
Category: MP3 toilet seat
Price: 180,600 yen

...That brings us to the N5A, which is Toto's latest and greatest. Packaged with the seat + washlet unit is the "Sound Rimocon," a wall-mounted remote control that offers various buttons for controlling all of the N5A's functions. Toto has integrated an SD card slot in the Sound Rimocon, and it supports the playback of the MP3 format. If that doesn't float your boat, there are 16 classical/healing tracks pre-loaded on the Sound Rimocon, including four original tracks by Toto.

It's important to point out that this isn't the first time Toto has announced MP3-supporting bathroom components. The Sound Rimocon was included with their "NEW Neorest" and "New Z Series" toilets released in April of this year -- but the N5A is a toilet seat that you can retrofit to pretty much any standard toilet.

The features of the N5A don't stop with MP3 playback. The "A" is for "Automatic" -- not only can it automatically open and close the toilet lid, but it will automatically flush as necessary. Now, how about something to detect if you're male or female and automatically put the toilet seat up or down?

What the... ? Crazy Did you take this picture?
I'm used to see people sleeping on the bus or subway, but on the seats not on the floor...

You can always buy one made by Toto. And I don't mean the group, Toto. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toto_(band).

now i need stickers "my life is off-topic", "i do not know how to do anything on-topic", "actually i am unable to be on-topic". recently i was banned from a specific BBS and my opponent has lost face greatly. i am so sorry. however, please notice, i put the data to a website, and have not "s-pammed the forum's" with these things. probably i extend a section about "learning japanese", and then people can call it "on-topic approved"?

the ominous buttons: public facilities are frequented by people who do not operate the "appreciate button", and in acute cases guess its self-explanatory.

really, probably i make a section about japanese language basics, to put this thread "on-topic", and because "YOU" made so many good replies to it. what about a list of "lucky numbers", and why? 8=wealth...

Whoa, whoa, whoa, down boy.

I'm not accusing you of anything, I'm just saying that this thread is off topic and needs to be moved. It's a basic procedure that happens all the time so that we can keep the forum nice and organized.

The reason that this is off topic (and probably should be in the General section) is because this particular section is for learning the Japanese language. There are separate sections for culture threads, just as there are for artistes.

guess local sewers plant people make a life out of it (like rats nourishing from rubbish, something i have observed personally). doing some sim city: it's just one thing most hudge cities have (except third world countries).

that's off topic. at yahoo news they wrote, if some tendencies continiue, north america gets a third world country by 2050. please do not make more contribution about loo's except something really new.

another sim game (lin city): if you remove the shanty towns (of a hudge city), they regenerate, and it ends up with actually more shanty towns than before (it gets worse not better)

another random data piece: the accident quote (sony). in america it jumps around 3 to 6 accidents within 100000 hours, in japan it constantly floats at 0.08 within 100000 hours. don't know if that's correct numbers.

if people 'always flush the loo' and don't make their business calls in the cabins, they refrain from other things as well.

figure out how to make money as fast as possible by playing monopoly tycoon. hopefully that thread does not embarass too much, even if low quality as usual. probably it needs a relocation. however, it does not demand hudge things or complicate political understanding. it does not bug the forum or make it a virtual graffiti wall, because it addresses differences in the daily life between the western world and japan. that's the purpose why i made it up, no pun intended. Doh!

now i add the superstition about PET bottles and cats, and not to eat in the public: various sites contain information japanese people do not perform it at all and consider it rather uncanny. w00t!
