From japan-zone.com:
February 21, 2004:
The big winner at the 27th Japan Academy awards was the Takita Yojiro samurai movie Mibugishiden. Takita (48) won Best Director, star Nakai Kiichi (42) took the Best Actor award and the best supporting actor went to Sato Koichi (43). Terashima Shinobu (31) won her eighth domestic movie award, taking Best Actress for her role in Akame Shijuyataki Shinjumisui. Among the six Newcomer Awards - geared mainly to marketing young stars of the future - were the ubiquitous Ueto Aya (photo, 18) and Odagiri Jo (28), who co-starred in Azumi. The awards were held yesterday at the Shin Takanawa Hotel in Tokyo.

I'm crazy about Ueto Aya. Though I haven't watched Azumi yet, she did a FANTASTIC job playing the role of Nao in Kinpachi Sensei 2002. On that series, she played a 9th grade student who is suffering from a sexual identity disorder. Because that series was 22 episodes long, and most of the focus was on her, the Japanese drama audience really got to know her.
She also had a 5-episode role in Wataru seiken wa oni bakari 6 (aka Making It Through 6, currently airing on KIKU-TV). She plays the role of Kana, who arrived from the United States for a brief visit with her family. She was so-so in that appearance, however the character of Kana wasn't written that well anyway.
