Jonathan Frid Dead: 'Dark Shadows' Actor Dies At 87
TORONTO -- Jonathan Frid, a Canadian actor best known for playing Barnabas Collins in the 1960s original vampire soap opera "Dark Shadows", has died. He was 87.
Frid died Friday of natural causes in a hospital in his home town of Hamilton, Ontario, said Jim Pierson, a friend and spokesman for Dan Curtis Productions, the creator of "Dark Shadows."
Frid starred in the 1960s gothic-flavored soap opera about odd, supernatural goings-on at a family estate in Maine.
His death comes just weeks before a Tim Burton-directed version of Dark Shadows is due out next month starring Johnny Depp as Barnabas Collins. Frid has a cameo role in the new movie in which he meets Depp's character in a party scene with two other original actors from the show.
Pierson said Burton and Depp were fans of Frid, who played a vulnerable vampire in one of the first sympathetic portrayal of the immortal creatures.
"Twenty million people saw the show at its peak in 1969. Kids ran home from school and housewives watched it. It had a huge pop culture impact," Pierson said.
Pierson said Frid, whose character was added in 1967, saved the show and stayed on until the end of its run in 1971. He said Frid was never into the fame and fortune and just wanted to be a working actor. He said he loved the drama and finding the flaws and the humanity in his characters.
"That's why he had this vampire that was very multidimensional. It really set the trend for all these other things that have been done with vampires over the last 40, 50 years," Pierson said. "Vampires were not in the vernacular. In 1967, there wasn't a pop culture of vampire stuff, so here he was in this mainstream network show that aired at 4 P.M. that really took off. And then he did the movie which was also a big hit."
Frid had been an accomplished stage actor before "Dark Shadows" made him famous. The show has lived on in reruns.
Stuart Manning, editor of the online "Dark Shadows News Page", said Frid brought a new dimension to the role of the vampire by injecting the role with depth and a sense of regret for his immortal existence.

I did watch the show as a kid. We scared ourselves to death with it.
I havent seen the movie despite being a TIm Burton/Depp fan because the preview looked kind of lame. Nothing is supposed to be humorous about Barnabas Collins. Tragic, scary but not funny. _________________

Ray Bradbury dead at 91
Ray Bradbury, the writer whose expansive flights of fantasy and vividly rendered space-scapes have provided the world with one of the most enduring speculative blueprints for the future, has died. He was 91.
Bradbury's daughter confirmed his death to the Associated Press on Wednesday morning. She said her father died Tuesday night in Southern California.
Author of more than 27 novels and story collections — most famously gThe Martian Chronicles,h gFahrenheit 451,h gDandelion Wineh and gSomething Wicked This Way Comesh — and more than 600 short stories, Bradbury has frequently been credited with elevating the often maligned reputation of science fiction. Some say he singlehandedly helped to move the genre into the realm of literature.
gThe only figure comparable to mention would be [Robert A.] Heinlein and then later [Arthur C.] Clarke,h said Gregory Benford, a UC Irvine physics professor and Nebula Award-winning science fiction writer. gBut Bradbury, in the e40s and e50s, became the name brand.h
Much of Bradbury's accessibility and ultimate popularity had to do with his gift as a stylist — his ability to write lyrically and evocatively of lands an imagination away, worlds he anchored in the here and now with a sense of visual clarity and small-town familiarity.
Bradbury frequently attempted to shrug out of the narrow gsci-fih designation, not because he was put off by it, but rather because he believed it was imprecise.
gI'm not a science fiction writer,h he was frequently quoted as saying. gI've written only one book of science fiction [gFahrenheit 451h]. All the others are fantasy. Fantasies are things that can't happen, and science fiction is about things that can happen.h

Andy Griffith dies at 86
Beloved TV icon Andy Griffith died at his Manteo, North Carolina, home on Tuesday morning. He was 86.
Griffith became a household name for his portrayal of a small-town sheriff on "The Andy Griffith Show," which aired from 1960-1968. His character, Andy Taylor, was a widower in the fictional town of Mayberry, N.C., which was thought to be modeled after Griffith's hometown of Mt. Airy, N.C. His character encountered daily drama from his sidekick deputy Barney Fife (Don Knotts) as well as his young son Opie (Ron Howard).
The actor went on to star on another long-running TV series: "Matlock." He played Ben Matlock, a no frills criminal defense lawyer who used his smarts to get people to confess in dramatic courtroom scenes. The show aired from 1986 to 1995.

Ernest Borgnine dead at 95
July 8, 2012, 2:29 p.m.
Ernest Borgnine, who created an array of memorable characters over the years and won the best actor Oscar for his role in 1955's "Marty," has died. Borgnine was 95.
His longtime spokesman, Harry Flynn, said that Borgnine died at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center with his family by his side.
As the cruel, vicious Sgt. Fatso Judson in 1953's "From Here to Eternity," the sweet, lonely butcher in 1955's "Marty" and the carefree con artist in the 1962-66 ABC comedy series "McHale's Navy," Borgnine was among the most recognizable faces on both the big and small screens.
Borgnine began acting after serving in the Navy during World War II. He made his film debut in 1951's "Whistle at Eaton Falls" and won the best actor Oscar for "Marty." Over the years, he appeared in such acclaimed films as "Bad Day at Black Rock," "Jubal," "Flight of the Phoenix," "The Dirty Dozen,""The Wild Bunch" and "The Poseidon Adventure."
He was born Ermes Effron Borgnino on Jan. 24, 1917 in Hamden, Conn.
Borgnine became the oldest performer to receive a Golden Globe nomination when he was acknowledged for the 2007 television movie "A Grandpa for Christmas," and in 2009, at age 92, he was nominated for an Emmy for his guest performance in the final season of "ER."
Borgnine told The Times in 2008 that books helped to keep him young.
"I do an awful lot of reading," he said. "It keeps me busy. I try to keep my mind going always. That is the thing that counts. You can have your body not feeling so good, but if your mind is working you got it made. That is the way I figured it out."

Rock guitarist Alvin Lee dead at 68
LONDON (AP) — British rock guitarist Alvin Lee, founder of the band Ten Years After who burst to stardom with a memorable Woodstock performance, has died. He was 68.
A statement posted on Lee's official website said he died Wednesday unexpectedly from complications following a routine surgical procedure. Lee's manager, Ron Rainey, said the guitarist died in Spain.
"We have lost a wonderful, much loved father and companion," said the statement signed by his daughter Jasmin, wife Evi and former companion Suzanne. "The world has lost a truly great and gifted musician."
The Nottingham, England-born Lee founded the band Ten Years After in 1967. The group first toured the U.S. in 1967, but its popularity exploded following Lee's rousing performance of the song "I'm Going Home" at Woodstock in 1969. Lee's epic and electrifying solos on his Gibson guitar for the 11-minute performance were immortalized in the documentary film about the legendary festival.
Ten Years After released ten albums together featuring the group's mix of blues, swing jazz and rock and toured the U.S. 28 times in seven years.
Lee left the band in 1975 to embark on a successful solo career that saw him recording with the likes of George Harrison, Steve Winwood and Mick Fleetwood and experimenting with different styles of country rock, rhythm and blues.
In total, Lee released more than 20 albums over a 45-year career. His most recent, "Still On the Road to Freedom," was released in August 2012 and incorporated a range of styles from rock to blues to jazz to funk.
Former Ten Years After bandmate Leo Lyons called Lee "the closet thing" he had to a brother, recalling "so many great experiences" shared together.
"He was an inspiration for a generation of guitar players," Lyons said in an email expressing shock and sadness over Lee's death.
