BTW tight that is a good idea!

You see, that's the strange thing about it... I've had my e-mail address posted here since I first signed onto JDorama.com about seven months or so ago. And even today, I haven't received ANY spam being sent to that address, even with my spam filtering on. When I browse through the suspected spam, I study each of them to see which of my e-mail addresses they used. 85-percent of the spam I receive are on the account I used purely for posting on the newsgroups, 10-percent are on accounts I used on eBay and e-commerce, and the other 5-percent is on the account I used when I register my domain names. My private account I've used for about five years, and many of the others less used accounts never get touched by spammers.

Other things that help prevent further spam:

1) Avoid using HTML in your e-mail clients. A popular method of spamming is to include an image file coded specifically for your e-mail address. Example, if an e-mail you receive has the following code:

Code:
<img="http://www.spammer.com/images/grandma-at-byte-me.com.jpg">

the JPEG file would be logged on the spammer's logs as being downloaded. That way, the spammer now knows your e-mail address is good, and they'll add it to the for-sale list.

2) Avoid using your e-mail address for anonymous FTP. For example, if a web page you visit has the following code:

Code:
<img="ftp://ftp.spammer.com/images/grandma-at-byte-me.com.jpg">

your browser will give your e-mail address to the FTP server, and therefore the spammer now knows your e-mail address. The way to fix this is to configure your web browser's options and put a bogus e-mail address in the anonymous FTP password field (I don't think Internet Explorer has one).

That's good! Maybe I shouldn't be so worried. I guess I'd still feel safer if this site could implement automatic obfuscation of some kind when it displays a member's email address though. Even just changing the @ to an HTML entity like @ should help avoid the spam harvesters.

But it might also be that your isp is filtering the spam at the server. I do that with my real email address using DNS blackhole lists (amongst other things) and it works great.

Right now my ISP isn't performing any spam filtering... It only filters viruses. Spam filtering is going to be an option soon when they upgrade their servers. Funny thing about the upgrades is that they're switching from Linux to FreeBSB, probably to avoid a lawsuit by SCO. My ISP has hundreds of CPUs, and SCO is asking for $699 per CPU for a license that would make their Linux installs legit.

Arghh. SCO makes me scream and rend my garments.

Does your ISP know that SCO has already made some vague threats about BSD too? No Unix is safe around those clowns. Not that I give credence to their threat, I just think they are going to waste other people's time and money until they run out of money, or get arrested for fraud.

Anyway, I think BSD is good, but I still prefer Linux.

I guess we are really off topic now. Maybe there ought to be a corollary to Godwin's Law that when a thread touches on SCO, it's over.

I ran into a worm a few days ago. It actually managed to infiltrate a german mailing-list provider. I tell you, that was just funny. Thousands of mails flooding out from the mail server, but the best thing were the idiots who replied with "remove me from mailing list or else" and stuff along that line. It was just funny. The sever got flooded first by the worm and then by the fools. I feel sorry for those server ops though lol.

...First off, your e-mail address being on web pages is NOT the reason why you get e-mail viruses. If you do not believe me, go to the Symantec web site and read the technical documents on each of today's viruses: MyDoom, Netsky, and Beagle...

I believe it is one of the reasons. Imagine that [email protected] is on every page on this website. Anyone who visits will have at least one page cached in the browser. The virus looks for local files (probably the browser cache also) and extracts email addresses.

Furthermore, all registered users would have received an email from me before..

Effectively, any infected PC that had visited JDorama.com before will send me the virus. hmmm... Sweat

I notice that the "junk mail" that I'm getting is all 24kb.
I guess that's the files that contain that beagle virus.
And I got another one from Juliana_Phang at yahoo.com

Please update your anti-virus software. This particular worm is rated a Category 4 by many of the anti-virus shops. I'm only posting this alert on JDorama.com because I've received several e-mails containing this worm, addressed to my Japanese drama e-mail account I use here.

Just curious... Why don't you use anti-virus software? HostDepartment.com (the service that hosts both JDorama.com and my own web sites) received the trojan.byteverify bug, and therefore infected every web page on the server. Fortunately, JDorama.com uses mostly *.php scripts which weren't affected, and it didn't impact the HTML files. However, my site still uses HTML files exclusively, so people who went to my site during the first few hours of the infection ended up having various bot programs installed onto their Windows systems.

What I'm getting at here is that ANY web site can possibly deliver viruses, trojans, or worms to your PC. It happened to the Kelly Blue Book site just this past Friday... A co-worker of mine went to the site, and on every web page he went to Symantec AntiVirus kept catching a trojan horse hiding in a GIF file (ex: right_arrow.gif.scr)

The days of using human means to avoid these situations are looooooooong gone. I know that some people feel that installing anti-virus or bot tools taints their personal sense of well being, but it's time that they just swallow their pride and use this stuff. Choke on the pride if you have to!

spybots're just a total annoyance to remove. I was working on a laptop that was infected to the wazzoo with them, and had to spend atleast 4 hours to clear everything out. Me, I'm just hanging on to my less standard webbrower and email client in hopes of lowering my chances of infection. Good ole opera and eudora. That tacked along with my university filtering out viriis for me on my email accounts. I'd be swimming in them if it wasn't for that. There're usually 6 or 7 emails that I get that're infected.

I'm also using Spybot 1.3. However like many other people you need to run at LEAST two different tools, and Spy Sweeper 3.0 does a great job cleaning the stuff that Spybot missed.
