you guys arent gonna get anywhere if all you type in one reply to this thread is "konbanwa" and "ganbarimasu". seriously if you guys want to learn the language you can't just watch it all the time. try this

1. take a long shower.
2. put on some deodorant because we all know youve been in your room for too long
3. Go outside and look for people saying "ahh! soo ne!" "honto da na!"
4. Make friends with them.

Problem solved. instead of studying 4 years alone in a dark room and getting nowhere, you could be speaking fluently after practicing with a japanese student after 2 (YES 2)years, you noobalicious noobcakes. Who told you guys to study alone seriously...-_-#

Listen, you pretentious dolt.

I don't know who you think you are coming in here and pointing your stereotypical finger at people, but I do know one thing--the likes of you are NOT welcome here.

Not everyone has a spare two years to go out and "look for people saying "ahh! soo ne!""
Many are high school students that go to schools that don't offer Japanese courses, others have full time jobs, and some live in places where the Japanese population is nil.

And, if YOU knew anything about Japanese culture, you would know that not many Japanese take kindly to random strangers walking up to them on the street trying to be friends.

So, my friend, here is some advice to you from your friendly moderator:

1) Remove that stick, or whatever is shoved up your @$$.
2) Go study English before giving advice about learning Japanese (you obviously don't know how to use proper punctuation, capitalization, and... oh wait, are those words too big for you?).
3) STFU.
4) Get out of our forum.

Wow. Way to go, mod! Applaud

Has anyone heard of "Let's Learn Japanese?" I just happened to see an episode on tv. It was made in the 80's, I believe. It's hosted by some old white lady, and they use clips from "Yan and the Japanese People" (apparently an old j-drama?) as well as some native Japanese speakers for help. I couldn't find any videos for sale, but I found the complete series available on Bittorrent, so I'm going to give it a try.

Does anyone know anything about it or have advice concerning it?

I would advise Racer to use it in some of the fangirl threads, but they would probably think "dolt" is a new SMAP song Shake Head
On topic, right on, Koukou, having spent some time with Japanese tourists at Dodger games, they are very polite and friendly, but, they ain't here to teach Japanese, they're on vacation, it's best to remember that

I have it, somewhere... I watched a episode or two. Not much more than that. A few basic words and sentences.

Well, I actually only read the first few posts in this thread and replied to them, i didnt actually follow along the whole way through. If you are not one of the people that sits at home and expects to learn one of the hardest languages in the world through 2 hours a week/dramas, then that reply was for you...obviously. koukou i will never reread and spellcheck my sentences in a forum. EVER. Go become an english teacher if youre gonna clown my english lmao.

I'm NOT making fun of anyone, but telling you guys to wake up and smell the coffee. if you are motivated on dramas and anime alone you arent going to learn this language let alone even learn relative clause for example.. Im speaking on experience guys. This language takes a solid 4 years to become fluent without japanese friends. and only 2 years after you know many vocabulary and sentence structures to learn japanese IF you have a friend that speaks it. but it will take well over 5-10 years to master.

THATS RIGHT! homie if you aren't finding japanese friends then its gonna be a lot harder isn't it???? And finally, im not being stereotypical, but i DO think most people that are signed up to JDORAMA.com are here because they like dramas, and the ones posting in "the learn japanese" section are trying to learn it as they watch dramas. if thats being stereotypical then i guess i am.
Im 2 years away from getting my masters so please dont bring your "english professor" sides out and put me on blast, cause not even college students use proper punctuation in forums. only a%$holes. sorry about the french

Maybe you should read the whole thing before making general statements.

it looks like you guys always have something pointless to say. go ahead and study it on your own time and see how far you get. sheesh i couldnt care less ONCE AGAIN about the people who speak japanese in here. I'm tlaking to the people who are way over their heads and don't even know it. for example I have a homie that wants to go to japan within the next year and all she's done is watch anime/dramas up to this point. shes confident that she will be able to get by with what she knows, but the truth is that she doesnt know enough! And those are the kinds of people im talking to. I couldnt care less if you dont like someone who tells you the truth. deal with it or spend the next decade running nowhere fast.
btw im black and i grew up using slang so shut your %$# up

You know what? If you couldn't care less, then WHY are you here?
No one in this forum appreciates your "advice" nor trolling, so how's about you make like Kubozuka Ryosuke and GO!

Thanks.

Hmm... OK. I don't expect to learn Japanese on dramas and anime alone, and I really don't think many people do. I do think they can be helpful, and certainly motivational, though. I have heard that 4 years is necessary to become fluent. I'm sure it depends on the person and the amount of time spent studying. Unfortunately for me, I am not able to take Japanese in school right now. Therefore, I came to this thread to see what others are doing, and to relate with them.

setfree - I hate to see someone kicked out of a discussion. I would love to hear your advice if you could keep it a little more... polite. Smile

I see. Was it that bad? I know it's cheesey, but was it helpful at all?

I wouldn't be able to learn a language by myself. there wouldn't be a teacher to pressure me to study and I'd usually lose interest. I'd also need someone who speaks the language to speak it to me everyday and test MY speaking out.
