The books that I used which were very effective were Let's Learn Hiragana and Let's Learn Katakana by Yasuko Kosaka Mitamura. Maybe it'll be helpful to you as well. Afterwards you can move on to Japanese for Busy People to reinforce your kana skills. But seriously, I should be telling myself this... I've slacked off way too much already.

i think i already have the hiragana book.....i've been practicing the character strokes on the first 12 or so...
but lately i've been slacking off too as it is so easy....but still trying. Applaud

go at your own pace in learning....

try www.japan-guide.com
www.japan-101.com

for info on japan, and they might have stuff on learning, but might not be as extensive in the learning parts as does the website you provided

your friend does have an advantage in knowing the basics in Kanji, since the Japanese use it too...
i'd say the Kanji is the most difficult, and i will probably learn it last, in character writing....i am starting with Hiragana then Katakana.

also having close to 2000 kanji compared to 46 hiragana or katakana doesn't hurt much either Bleah

*shivers*

Being in a japanese course would be advisable for me if I ever get to that stage. If I ever do, that is. I'm already slacking off in trying to sharpen my kana skills, much less during kanji bleh Being in a class really gets you to study mode and the accompanying stress for the sake of getting good grades.

yeah, being in a class, makes you learn at a excelerated rate, and the teacher makes sure you do the hw and test....better learning, but more commitment on the class schedule.
