(I hope I can make a topic here.)

I went to a DVD shop the other day and came across that 'The Happiness of the Katakuris', because the cover was quite catchy and said something about a mix of comedy, horror and musical. The movie is really crazy, has no obvious plot, but I found it really great (especially the musical-like songs), although I disliked the parts in which they used clay figures instead of the actors.

Summary, I found in the Internet:
(The Katakuri family has just opened their guesthouse in the mountains. Unfortunately their first guest commits suicide and in order to avoid trouble they decide to bury him in the backyard. Things get way more complicated when their second guest, a famous sumo wrestler, dies while having sex with his underage girlfriend and the grave behind the house starts to fill up more and more.)

I found some of the songs on Youtube:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=GZq_pQAVQYA
http://youtube.com/watch?v=BvOtezZdoj0
http://youtube.com/watch?v=clBQYOIA-WE

What do you think about this awesome movie?

What is the purpose of the first scene (the one with that clay devil)? It has nothing to do with the actual movie.

Are there any other good movies made by Takashi Miike?

A lot of people like this movie, but I'm not one of them. I found it a little too non-sensical and the comedy didn't really work for me. But it does go all over the place in an outrageous way, which is Miike's style.

Miike is pretty famous in the West, actually, and has lots of fans. But in my opinion, his one real claim to fame is picking some outrageous stories for his movies. He makes lots and lots of movies, sometimes 6 or 7 a year, so some are good, but many are crap.

I like his less violent/outrageous stuff: "Kishiwada shônen gurentai: Bôkyô (1998)" (quite funny in parts), Chûgoku no chôjin (1998) (a/k/a Bird People of China).

Maybe the thread should be about Miike. Surely he deserves his own thread?

I haven't watched many of his movies but the ones I've seen impressed me a lot. Audition and Izo are very extreme but I like it.

I liked "Ichi the Killer" (Koroshiya 1), but that was mostly due to the great job done by Tadanobu Asano as the masochistic Kakihara, an unforgettable character. However, there was a little too much violence for me, even if it was cartoonishly over the top.

The Guys from Paradise (2000) was also good. Not really violent, but had interesting characters.

I've probably seen about 2 dozen of his movies now ... most of the violent yakuza ones I don't even really remember, they all blur together. bleh

Zebraman (2004) was fun if you've ever seen other Japanese superhero TV shows.

I saw Gozu recently and I'll never look at breast pumps in the same way again at the drugstore. The ending was funny as hell though...at least in my twisted mind.

Is my mind twisted enough for this movie? hehe

And I hope the breast pump was used by a woman....but then again you could never tell.

Well, the woman in question didn't use a breast pump, she used her own hands. And she was quite old. Which made it really disturbing. And funny hehe

Did you know: Women's breasts have more then one "hole" for the milk to come out. In fact, they can have as many as five. When they squeeze, the milk comes out like water from a shower head.
