A couple years ago I remember some drama that showed an older gentleman teaching a young boy how to make a shiny mud ball, called "dorodango" (doro means mud). It actually turns out very shiny, and very nearly spherical. Quite nifty. But now I can't remember the drama, maybe it was Sensei Shiranaino.

Then I ran across this site dedicated to making these, and the guy has really perfected his technique. I find the results beautiful.

The site is: http://www.dorodango.com/
Check out the gallery: http://www.dorodango.com/gallery.html

Here's the image from his homepage:

I drank a pot of coffee and can't stop myself!

Just trying to lively up the joint. I thought dorodango are cool and pretty, and incidentally related to jdorama. Should I put them in a existing thread?

Hmm, maybe if you fired them in kiln they'd be strong enough. I'll have to try that next time I'm near a kiln. And some mud.

So are those edible? They look good enough to eat, like shiny mochi.

No they aren't edible, unless you like to eat dirt!

But maybe you're on to something. If you switch cocoa powder and confectioner sugar for the dirt, you could make a softball sized ball of chocolate. It might not polish up as nice though.

i think the drama you're talking about is yoiko no mikata. in episode one there's an old teacher that teaches sakurai sho's character how to make the shiny mud balls

Okay, I just remembered where this thread should go: we've got a Japanese culture thread somewhere around here in GD... I just gotta find the puppy.

Well, virtually anything about Japan could go into a Japanese culture thread. Catch-all threads are sort of like that warehouse at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark. Posts go in, never to be discussed again. In other words, I don't think that's the right thing to do.

Sorry about that. Well, it's just my opinion. I can be overruled.

I felt like I was following the rules creating this topic. I searched for dorodango, there was no such topic, so I thought it would be interesting to create one. I don't feel this relates well to a general culture thread, as general culture isn't being talked about. I mean, why not merge COSPLAY into the general Japanese culture thread then?

I guess you're right.

There's always gonna be a thread or two that's in a gray area which has me wracking my brain. Bang Head

Those dorodango look good.

Sort of happy this top-level post wasn't thrown off into some "catch all" warehouse thread never to be seen again.

Nice.

Doesn't have the same sex appeal as my current one, though. Wink
