I haven't read the manga, so i don't know how close it really follows.
Its good though. The cast is doing a fantastic job
well....at least from the 4 eps i've seen
You should, very entertaining manga, especially when you're the reading type. and... especially when you're sick of mangas that are never finished and far from reality like OnePiece, Naruto, and Bleach, although they are also entertaining, but dunno when the story will finish...

The manga has been translated into English up to book 6 or 7. You'll probably be able to get them from Amazon if they are not available in a bookstore close by.

'Nodame Cantabile' manga character exists in real life
The cover of the first volume of the "Nodame Cantabile" manga series. (Kodansha)
Megumi Noda, the star character of the manga series "Nodame Cantabile," which was a popular feature in the woman's comic magazine "Kiss," and became a hit as a Fuji TV drama, exists in real life, it has emerged.
"Nodame Cantabile" tells the story of a meeting between Shinichi Chiaki, an elite student of Momogaoka Music Academy whose father was a famous pianist, and Megumi Noda, a hopeless piano student going by the nickname "Nodame," who lives in a messy apartment.
After drinking too much Chiaki ends up staying at Nodame's place. As he wakes up to the sound of a beautiful piano melody, he sees Nodame heading toward the piano in her messy room. Chiaki instructs Nodame, who hates piano practice, and as he tries to draw out her talent, he learns about the real fun and difficulty of music, and realizes his own dream of wanting to become a conductor.
The 16-volume original manga series by Tomoko Ninomiya was a major success, selling 15 million copies, and the drama which has screened up until the ninth volume achieved an impressive viewer rating of 19.9 percent during a Nov. 13 screening, according to ratings firm Video Research.
The idea for Nodame, who is regarded as a strange person because she continues to live in a messy room and often makes strange noises, was conceived in 2001. A female fan posted a photograph of a piano being played in a messy room on the bulletin board of a Web site operated by Ninomiya, saying, "Look at this interesting photo I took." The woman was a music college student named Megumi Noda.
At the time, Ninomiya, who was looking for ideas for a new serial publication, gained inspiration from the photograph, and decided to produce a musical comedy with a sloppy main character. Editors at Kodansha, the publisher of the magazine "Kiss," gave the work the thumbs-up, saying the gap between classical music and a hopeless girl was interesting. This led to the serialization of "Nodame Cantabile."
Ninomiya reportedly continues to phone Noda, who has since graduated from the music college and is teaching piano in Fukuoka, to get ideas for the manga series. Nodame's episode in the manga of creating a song called "Mojamoja Taiso," for example, came after Noda played a piece through the telephone to create an image for the song.
At the end of each comic book, the phrase, "Special Thanks Megumi Noda" always appears. (Mainichi)

Thank you for this interesting post. I've noticed that Ninomiya acknowledge a lot of the characters at the end of every volume. I just thought she was taking the fantasy a step further by treating her characters as real person, like a lot of authors do. Never thought Nodame actually existed.
Off the top of my head I don't recall her acknowledging Chiaki, but she did several instrument players. I wonder if she was also using their real names in the manga.

It'd be a blast if someone managed to dig up and post that original photo...

Totally I agree.
Nodame Cantabile is being serialized on monthly magazine, gKissh. ( It is published 2 times a month ). And about half of Japanese convenient stores have the stock of this magazine. Main readers of this magazine are 20 something working women.
In a sense, Onepiece and Naruto are mainly for low teens, I guess. There are a lot of comics worthy for old guys who had the experience to read tons of manga.
But by my few experience to read the magazine for teenager girls and the prejudice ( Because I have not read Nodame Cantabile manga edition. ), this manga seems to have strongly the feature of the magazines for teenagers girls at especially Character of Nodame. Then I didnft want to read this manga or comics.
16 comics have published. I have not read them. And I donft know gKissh. By some BBS on manga in Japan, Nodame Cantabile became famous before TV show begun. Before TV show, there seems some music CD with sleeve notes by Sakuma who is the reviewer in TV shows and whose review are plenty of strange expression of Japanese. And this CD seems to be sold out now.
I just check Ninomiyafs website and her BBS, there is some comment from over 40 age man, g I did Otona-gai of 16 comics.h Otona-gai means that the person enough old to buy full complete set at once, because when usually, the person who belongs to the main generation follows their favorite mangas, they buy each comic book or magazine one by one. Then now, my decision that I will never read manga of Nodame cantabile becomes to be rocked the foundation now. I watch this tv show every Monday and some one say first 9 books of 16 is episode in Japan, then I may buy or read in near Manga Kissa ( comics café), after Chiaki will goes to Europe in TV show.

(390yen*16, maybe 8 hours are necessary to read them all)
And in my short net surfing about Nodame Cantabile, I find some website or BBS about the playing itself in TV show in Japan. I donft have enough knowledge of classic music, but actually I enjoyed the playing itself in TV show.
People in Jdorama.com, do you enjoy the playing itself in tv show?

I don't speak for others but I do enjoy the performances. I have purchased some CDs from this drama and sometimes compare them to recordings of the same piece by another performer/orchestra. Some sites have a few music experts who were able to comment in detail on the performances in the drama. I don't know enough of the technicalities and, as a result, I'm probably able to just enjoy the music without prejudice.

Me too.
I wonder why we don't talk about each performance in this tv show.
When we enjoy the perfomance, do we need any license?
