I think a person becomes a 'hentai' when he/she deviates from the de facto characteristics and/or behaviour of his/her peer group. Nodame is a hentai because she doesn't behave as expected - she does not want to compete, won't do her house chores, and you won't want her to cook for you unless you are contemplating suicide.

The gay guys, on the other hand, probably behaved as proper gays. Sweat
