I just finished watching this and yeah, you're right, the ending is thoroughly confusing.

My take on it was:

Goichi somehow worked his way free and that's who we see coming out of the waves at the end.

But having read the other opinions, I think thtl probably has the correct interpretation.

Btw, thanks for starting this thread Ganmo! It's amazing what you can find once you wade past all the fanboy crap. Also, don't know why this thread got moved. It's a drama, not a movie.
