Aside from playing region free, i'm looking for a player that plays DIvX as well. Any links would be great plz. That way after my BT downloads, I can burn them to cd-r's and play those .avi files in that stand-alone dvd player. Saves me the time to converting them to vcd/mpg's. _________________

Niko, the LVD-2002 might still be available, albeit pricey. Have you looked into the replacement, the LVD-2010?

Sort of. My friend has told me that there is only 1 place to get it now, whereas last yr, there was so many vendors for that product. And actually, i was hoping that the word "pricey" weren't associated with this product. Last I checked was about $175...Thx BM.

Yeowch. $175? I think in one of the dvdrhelp.com forums, they had the player listed over $200... Leeches!
Some of you may be laughing your arses off at my request for a VHS-format VCR. LOL!
Anyway, I'm in the market for a good quality VCR that can play VHS tapes. What I'd like to do is start converting many of my VHS tapes to digital. My friend recorded a bunch of FUJI-TV/NGN dramas in the mid-to-late 1990's, and has loaned me a bunch of his stuff. I have a VCR right now, however it can only output composite video. I'd like to get a VCR that can output S-Video so that I can retain as much of the clarity in the video as I can. I'd also like it to be Super-VHS recordable so that I can use it as a backup when I record KIKU-TV shows. And I DO NOT want a DVD/VHS combo unit. I have enough DVD players, and I don't really need one more. I'd like to spend up to about $200 for the unit, so money isn't an issue.
I went down to Circuit City today, and all they had were 4-head players. They once had a SVHS VCR unit for sale, but not this week.

Unfortunately I think your options are more limited now than before because a lot of the companies have stopped making these. Since I dealt with VHS a lot and heard a lot about those who copied SVHS, I was told the best brand of SVHS VCR's was Sony. JVC has mixed reviews so it might be trial and error. Unfortunately Sony doesn't seem to make SVHS VCR's anymore. I would stay away from anything that may be Sharp, RCA, Zenith (if they come up...I don't think they make SVHS anyway). You might have to just buy one and try it out. If it sucks, return it
For myself, I would try the brands that have done me very well with VCR's as far as playback, recording, and lifespan are concerned (Panasonic + Toshiba). I highly doubt Toshiba has SVHS anymore either, but I think Panasonic does.

I feel ya groink. I was looking for a VHS with s-video capability a while back and couldn't find one to my liking. If anyone does have a brand and model, I'm certainly willing to give it a try.
I'd have to agree that S-VHS VCRs are hard to come by... You're probably forced to looking for one online, but that won't even guarantee that you'll find one... At least not in the States... Gomen.
Well, fortunately people are still selling SVHS VCRs on eBay, and brand-new, too! The suck part of it is that all of them are shipping either UPS Ground or from Canada. As you can observe on any map, there isn't any dry ground between California and Hawaii. LOL!!!!
I'm going to try work out a shipping exchange with my aunt in New Hampshire... If she can receive the package, then ship it to me via regular good ole USPS, that'll work out for me!

Huh?? What happened to that freeway they were going to build between California and Hawaii??
forget freeway, they should just invent teleporting
A trekker once told me that the theory behind Einstein's equation e=mc^2 is actually being used in the teleporter on the Star Trek series. Talk about making crap up! LOL!
As for the prices, the starting bid price for the SONY units is at $150 for the deluxe editing models, which I have a eye on. There's one particular unit that appears to be fully functional, it just hasn't been re-furbished prior to posting on eBay. I've e-mailed the seller asking for shipping charges to Hawaii (he says he ships world-wide). There's a SONY service facility right in Mapunapuna, about a stone's throw from Pearl Harbor where I work, so if I do receive the unit, I'll head straight for there to get the belts changes and re-calibrated.
