Zatoichi and the one armed Swordsman? Ooo! I've never seen that one.

Which ending are you ganna get?

I've got a copy of "Zatoichi at Large" coming in the next couple of weeks. It'll be my first Zatoichi from the 1970s.

I had heard, somewhere along the line, that there were two ending to Zatoichi and the one armed swordsman.

One where Zatoichi wins, and one where the One Armed Swordsman comes out on top.

I don't know. Like I said, that's one I haven't seen. But someone somewhere stuck that little bit of trivia in my head.

Hmm, I guess I was the one who mentioned that a ways back... Now that I think about it, I'm not sure what happens... We'll see when I pick it up in July... Smile

Speaking of The One-Armed Swordsman, Shaw Bros. is expected to release that movie on DVD in July as well... I'd better start snooping around eBay around that time...

That Beat Takeshi's Zatoichi spoiler ahead!!!!
dancing at the end of the recent Zatoichi film's just nutty. I mean, it goes on for a long time, and, it's like EVERYONE in the film's in that dance number. Neat-o, but, nutty. More nuttier, the very end where Zat' opens up his eyes. He got blue metallic eyes? Hmmm.
SPOILER OVER

I've spent too much time outside lately, clearing the brush off my hill, and cutting down trees.

Or maybe it's because I saw that Jackie Chan's "Around The World in 80 Days" opened at a theater near my house yesterday.

Anyway, all I could think of when I saw the picture of Shintaro as Zatiochi above was... I wonder if he really was the reincarnation of Robert Newton?

Newton, one of my all time favorite English Actors played Blackbeard, and he played Long John Silver in a couple of movies, incuding "Treasure Island" (Not to mention the Treasure Island TV series). And he played Mr. Fix in the 1956 version of "Around the World--"

I even checked the dates, but Newton died in '56 and Katsu was born in '31.

Boy, talk about two actors, comeing out of the same mold, who both created indelible characters. Newton pretty much defined the Pirate character that all movies use now. Especially Long John. And Shintaro was Zatoichi.

Slick and technically stylish is good.

And Pretty is Terrific.

But in the long run, you just can't top talent.

See? I've been getting too much sun. I doubt any of that made sense.

Oh yeah, forgot Messengers. I bought that one. Good fun feel good movie. Special interest to me as I'm into cycling. Know a bunch of guys who are bicycle messengers here, but never talked much about it with them. The clipless pedals is a classic cycling gag, has happened to everyone.
Just watched the Duel project of 2LDK and Aragami. Both good movies. I think Aragami is Kitamura Ryuhei's (did I get that right) best work so far of what I've seen. The story/plot is consise & simple. It ends appropriately and doesn't feel too drawn out. 2LDK's got dark humor. A catfight that get's out of hand?

I don't know if this has been covered to death, or if it deserves its own thread, but...

Has anyone found a real good internet source for Japanese movies in the U.S.? (And I'm talking about movies with actors, as opposed to cartoons)

Okay, I know the common sources:

e-bay

Amazon.com

Yahoo

DVD Asian

yesasia (though between their high prices, and my poor languages skills, I've found yesasia to be more trouble than it's worth.)

And for the schlock, Tokyo Shock.

With those I've listed, we only get a trickle of the titles that have come out. And the list gets further reduced when you add in that you want a DVD set for Region 1, and you want English Subtitles.

So, does anyone know of a good store that I've left out?

You've pretty much covered all of 'em as far as I know, Geez. There's one person on eBay that I would recommend, and that's cannibal-king... He always has a number of fansubbed (?) Japanese and Korean movies available for sale... And he's always been fair and reliable, as far as I'm concerned... Big Grin

Dang it BMW! That was not what I was hoping to see here.

I was hoping to see posts from you and a bunch of other movie mavens saying, Jeez Geez! Don't you know about

Herbie's-every-freakin'-movie-you-ever-wanted-to-see-dirt-cheap . com?

Since I'm here, a quick movie review:

I watched "Love Letter" last night.

No sword fights. No fist fights. No car chases. No bar room brawls. No gratuitous sex scenes. No slapstick.

And with all that going against it, one of the best, and most beautiful films I've ever seen.

If any of the macho guy types watch it... you might want to do so alone. Because it will bring a tear to your eye.

Oops, sorry to disappointcha, Geez, but those sources are the only ones I know about...

Saw The Terminal last Saturday. Although it's not a Japanese movie, it was still a wonderful movie. Highly recommended. Smile

BMW,

I read your comments about "The Terminal" yesterday and I was pleased to hear that it works.

A Speilberg/Hanks movie is a must see for me no matter what. But it was nice to hear that this one works.

It will, however, be a while before I see it. I've discovered Netflix, and I doubt I'll ever go to a movie theater to see a film again. There's something very cool about finding a new DVD in my mailbox five days a week.

I just put The Terminal on my queue, right after Twilight Samuri.

The way the theaters are reaming people with admission and snack costs, they're gonna end up like Drive-Ins... I paid $7.50 for a matinee!! I'd have to REALLY like a movie a lot to see it twice or more in a theater at those prices... When I was in college, the matinee price was like $2.50...

They are just passing on the reamage. For a first-run movie, it can be that 90% of the ticket price goes to the distributor. The theater ends up with peanuts, hoping you buy some popcorn.
