$300-$400?? Sounds like a sweet deal. Of course, you have to consider food and a place to stay, which could be pricey.
Eating out is generally pretty damn cheap, luckily Of course you have to check the menu outside first....some shabby looking places can be pricey and vice versa. A place to stay, if you don't have friends, can be expensive. I have several friends there but I feel bad imposing Plus some of them, I haven't met their families...it would be weird with this white chick in their house with 40% silence, 40% English jibberish, and 20% mediocre Japanese at random

I've met most of my friends parents. When i flew from okinawa to Osaka, my friend didn't pick me up, her parents did! So i was kind of nervous. but i've met her mom before, so i didn't feel as uncomfortable. i prefer being with the parents, since i'm forced to speak japanese. if my friends were there i would be speaking english the whole time. _________________

Ohh I was reading up on a tour of Japan! The deals weren't too bad, like $500 for 5 nights or something? Nice hotels and accomodations. I don't really know the name of the company that was doing it since the company is chinese and the brochure was chinese and the tour is in Chinese as well, LOL. But I'm sure there are some good ones out there

how about home-stay type of accomodation?
I'm living with a home-stay family right now in Japan. Homestay is usually quite expensive, but very recommended if you are hoping to experience Japanese lifestyle at first hand. My homestay is USD$530 a month but I am a smart boy and have a scholarship (^^) u fu fu.

I know this is a little late, but if your looking at hotel type accomodations, check out business hotel types. Generally cheaper, but still pretty nice usually. Of course hostels will be cheap, but you have to look into those pretty early. Yeah, depending on how comfortable you are with going out on your own, you may want to start with a package tour deal. And of course, depending on how much travelling around you're planning on doing, check into a JR railpass. If you're going to just stay in Tokyo area, then it won't be worth it though.
