darn, iguess i waited too long to get the liteon models. i was thinking if i waited long enuough, the prices will drop a bit. who knew that they'd discontinue it so fast?

You're not kidding. Not too long after I bought my LVD-2002, they pulled the plug on it... A couple of places had it, but were asking $200+ for it... Damn profiteers! Angry

Yeah, pretty much. The display on the player isn't nearly as good or as versatile as my old Sony player, but it's a trade off. I love the fact that I can hack it have it play any DVD from any region. And it can also play PAL-encoded DVDs and convert the video to NTSC for my TV. A great feature.

Don't know much about the Philips, but it's a good brand. You might post a question or search the dvdrhlp message board for an answer. I'm sure you're not the first one to wonder about this player's capabilities. You might try the Philips site as well....

Good luck!

I think you could convert 'em all to MPEG then watch 'em on the tube... dvdrhelp.com probably has a guide on how to do this. Smile

My advice would be to get somewhat of a name brand, that way it doesn't fall apart on you in a year... Or less.

Yea I also got a Panasonic DVD recorder that plays my DVDs. My CyberHome just plays everything else. It's played every single VCD, SVCD, XVCD, XSVCD, and pretty much everything I have not including divx though. I got it like 4 months ago so I got about a year on it before it self destructs hehe hehe

AHAHAHAHAH holy crap they go that high? I wouldnt say it's crap yet, it might have all the hacks and features as a cheap dvd player but from my experience cheap stand alone players will do just about anything you like, lol

Yeah, it's a pretty solid player... It weighs like 10-15 pounds, 'cause it's got copper-clad subframe for shielding and a die-cast drive assembly for maximum precision.... Actually, from what I've heard/read, most of the big name DVD players (Sony, Pioneer, Toshiba, etc.) can't be remote-hacked and can only be hacked by making changes to the mainboard (new firmware and/or EPROMs)... That's why I bought the LiteOn...

yeah, but it takes forever and a day just to encode one file. thats why i'll opt to get one that can handle dvix/xvid.

My old Sony (DVP-S360) seems to play any DVD-R that I've thrown at it, so I'd think the Philips could handle it without any problems... Doesn't dvdrhelp.com list what types of media that the Philips can and cannot play?

i figure i'd ask buru b/c i bought some dvd-r's from him. and being that I think he's prolly tested out those brand of dvds on his phillips, i'd get the info straight from the horses mouth, so to speak...
