Could be an error in the source video or maybe you're not ripping the video from the vcd correctly

Must be, I was stopped cold using VCDGEAR even after trying all the options. It suggested something about removing a bumper of some sort. But it did it with every kind of VCD I tried, so I'm trying to limit human error.

Use isobuster to rip the dat file since you can't just copy the dat file onto your hard drive and expect it to work. Isobuster has this filter option, which fixes most problems.

from vcd to divx? It really depends on file length and cpu speed and ram. How big is the file? For me, it's maybe like half an hour or so for a 45min video

Yeah that was about the same I experienced, problem was once it hit a bad sector or something it asked to ignore/retry and it just freezed. But so far its worked and now all I have to try is the conversion to divx now. Came out more compressed than I wanted it -- so I guess its now about adjusting the settings in TMPGEnc. ouch bad sectors suck. It's hard to do anything with a bad sector but good luck Wink

--- Well now that I�fm putting 2 and 2 together. I�fm trying to figure out at what settings will a VCD look decent [meaning subs and image intact] in DivX. Since the image size is from a fixed ratio VCD is smaller than all those we trade on BitTorrent – I�fm wondering if changing the Kbps has anything to do with that.

I'm using Nero 6. The program is pretty good, you can make different kind of medias such as data files or change mpeg into vcds.

Nero will do fine. The Express feature is simple and easy to use. A burnin programme is usually bundled in a cd burner, Nero is likely.
