It is true that this is a very interesting and friendly place. I visit a lot but don't always open the door. Sorry. Actually I am older than the hills so tend to be a bit wary in discussions that go into anything technical. BUT I love jdramas and watch them all over the place. Fall madly in love with some of the actors at different times. So much talent and charm to sample. My husband/trulove tends to roll his eyes at me and sighs now and then..
I'm much the same way--visit quite a bit, don't say much. I'm older, too, and married, so some of the conversation just doesn't apply to me. And yes, my husband reacts that way also to my Jdrama addiction. I just laugh at him.

hrm can't remember when I joined but yeah I don't see a lot of the old names posting much anymore. I mostly hang out in the Hello! Project thread myself
Also the amount of interesting topics seem to have gone down, at least it seems that way to me. So many gallery type threads now, I blame that mega Yonekura Ryoko thread that started it

One thought I have on this... Just imagine, JDorama.com came to life in 2000. So in that one instance, you had over fifteen years of content just waiting to be posted and torn apart and analyzed. I'd say it took about three years or so to wear those fifteen plus years of information out.
Since then, the amount of information that fits into the JDorama.com main premiss is on an as-released basis. For example, when Good Luck! was released, there was lots to talk about, but soon after the subject matter dwindled.
It's not just JDorama.com either... I see the amount of drama information in general to talk about dwindle quite a bit. There's really not that much going on in Japanese drama land. That's why now you're seeing more and more non-topic postings, and postings made by idol-hungry individuals. Look at me -- I can go on and on for YEARS talking about Noriko-chan.

Very good points Groink
I also agree with the earlier comments about what a nice community this is on JDorama.com. I used to visit the postings on Japan today but all they do is complain about Japan all day. But this sight is full of interesting people and one of my favorite subjects. _________________

I don't see why the gallery threads can't coexist with the discussions...
and BMWracer is one of the people that holds this site together IMO.
Maybe a separate forum for just for "galleries" may cut down on confusion... just so that discussions won't be overlooked as easily?
and... NO eltinator, I meant "wet behind the ears" noobs. lol I've only been posting for 7-8 months but this place and severely dwindled even since then.

Agreed... too many open racists and conspiracy theorists. That gets boring day in and day out. _________________

Thanks for the vote of confidence guys. I guess you can't make everyone happy here...
Admittedly, my Ryoko-chan thread seemed to have opened the flood gates (pun intended ) for other artiste threads... But I don't see how it has weakened this board in any way, shape or form... Sounds like either sour grapes for whatever reason and/or someone's looking for a scapegoat......
Seeing someone brought this up, might as well comment on it...
For the record, I like the galleries in general. I don't look at them hardly anymore, but they're nice to look at.
With that aside... Some of the die-hard Japanese drama fans (i.e. the scope of the drama's theme/plot is way more important than the artists who appear in them) see a huge distinction between the passion for Japanese dramas, and passion for artistes. I tend to agree with this idea, too. Not only is there a line between the two, there's a brick wall between them.
JDorama.com is a message board to talk about Japanese dramas. Idolizing artists to extreme levels, in my honest opinion, goes outside the scope of Japanese dramas. I rank the mega-idol threads right up their with gravure models, race queens, and even AV girls. I started coming to this conclusion when I first started the Sakai Noriko On-line shrine. After the huge influx of images there, I realized that she was being portrayed more of a visual toy than a serious actress/singer/overall good person. That's when I became depressed over it and stopped contributing to that thread. Took me awhile to come to this realization.
So with that out in the open... It may actually be a good idea to create a separate forum just for idolizing of people. I aways thought that the Japanese Artistes forum was more about the discussion of artists, and the roles they played in the Japanese dramas. In otherwords, there should be a lot more thought-provoking input in that forum, while in an Idol, there would be images galore.
BTW, though I'm part of the new generation here, I tend to see myself playing the role of the elderly statesman, always writing lengthly posts trying to put things into perspective.

You have great points. But I still think that idolizing after actors/actresses is ok. It's not only pics that we post in the galleries but we also discuss their filmography and (although biased) comments on them and their acting ability. But I guess it's all perspective of the viewer/user.

And you fit that role really well! _________________

Good point, Groink.
Now you've got me thinking.
I've never ever considered [my thread] as exploitative in any way, but more of an homage...
