Firewall in office! Bleah
Its the only internet connection I have here.. and only thing possible here is HTTP. Even FTP ports seem blocked.. Sad

Ah, I see.

I don't know of a solution, if the firewall is not under your control to allow you to forward the BT ports. The BT faq has info on ports and proxies:

only HTTP? Probably means only port 80 is open that means you can only use tracker sites that runs on port 80 like PHP. Trackers running on 6969 and others you probalby won't be able to connect to. But thats only half your problem, the other half is receiving connections from peers that the tracker gives you. Commonly this is 6881+ but you can set it to anything you like.

You MIGHT be able to use something like putty and do a port forwarding using a HTTP tunnel to your proxy gateway.

I don't like your chances though Shake Head

Highly recommend ABC client. Built on top of SHADOW's experimental client, it also manages multiple downloads in a single window.

I put my vote for ABC also. I use that but I have no idea if it can get through firewalls. I havent had any trouble with it so I recommend it to anyone Big Grin

This is old information from http://www.donkax.com/bittorrent/index.php?action=faq (closed)
Quote:
Q: Is there any way to use BitTorrent behind a proxy?
A: Yes there is. Download ProxyCap and install it. Once you run ProxyCap, right click the tray icon and go to Preferences. Add your proxy to the Proxies list and then go to the rules page to add BitTorrent. On the Rules page click the new icon in the upper right corner and for 'Application' select the 'Specify' radio button and then '...' and go to C:\Program Files\BitTorrent and select btdownloadprefetched.exe. That is the only option you will have to change. Hit the OK button and it should be ready to go.

ProxyCap http://proxylabs.netwu.com/index.html

and BitComet http://www.bitcomet.com/ has option using proxy "HTTP1.1 connect".

Since I don't use proxy to connect to the Internet, I've not tried it.
Is this information helpful to you?

OH BTW... when you install it will install torrent serach, another installation box will come up with the name "Qutrit Personal Search Assistant', dont install it, is spyware (bad for your com).
i couldnt find the official site, but this one seems decent
Its only 500kb so it wont take too long Mr Green

As I am not too familiar with BitTorrent, I think you can post that piece of info in this thread........... http://www.jdorama.com/viewtopic.841.0.htm

Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong though. Smile

hi all.

i have BitTornado as my BT client. I'm kinda tired of all multiple windows i get from that client when i'm DL/seeding/uploading, not to mention all the resourses it takes up, so i wanted to try either TorrentSTorm or ABC. I've dl'ed both .exe's and tried out a torrent from d-addicts. on both the clients, i get a "unable to connect" error. when i reverted back to to BitTornado client, it seeded without problem. i've since tried a bunch of torrent files and they all give me that can't connect error. can anyone let me know whats going on?

(incidently, i've tried azureus and that is not an option b/c it uses SO much resources, it slowed my machine to the point of ALMOST locking up.)

Much appreciated and Thx in advance!
- niko

I currently use ABC but I don't get really good results from it and sometimes my system hangs. I tried Azureas previously and it was worse. I'm running a P4 2.4 GHZ with 1 GB of ram on a DSL...so my PC shouldn't have too many problems. Sometimes...I can get good DL speeds...but mostly the speeds are really slow and my PC will be close to hanging.

I think I'll try one of the other clients mentioned here that doesn't take up as much resources...

It sounds like your PC is fine to me, it has plenty of power. Also, if you sometimes get good speeds, but not other times, the problem is not likely to be your setup, but it is probably that the other clients in the swarm are not performing well for whatever reason. There's not much you can do to increase speed if the uploaders are going slowly.

One other thing to check is if your upload bandwidth is saturated. If so, that could slow down your d/l bandwidth to a crawl.

If BitTornado works, but ABC doesn't, I would first suspect configuration problems in ABC, as ABC is based on some of the BitTornado code.

Can you check configuration options between the 2 clients to make sure that ABC is configured as much like your BitTornado client as possible?

How do you check that? I think I have my upload speeds set not very high. Is there a tool that can analyze your settings?

For you guys with problems with ABC or AZ etc, you could try BitComet. I've tried it for a while before. It's pretty good. It's written using C++ so should be faster, at least on slower systems. But I went back to AZ b/c I like its inferface better, and I don't have any problems with it.

Is this a general line speed test...or a bittorent application speed test? I had assumed from the previous post, that they were referring to the bittorent upload speeds (not my DSL in general)...though maybe I misinterpreted.

No I'm pretty sure they are referring to your DSL upload speed. BT upload speeds will go as high as your connection can support given there are enough peers etc.
