For those who are interested...

In Hawaii, KIKU-TV just aired episode 28... Interesting thing about this episode is that it's the first episode KIKU-TV has subbed in-house. It's now official -- as of this episode, ties between KIKU-TV and JN Productions on all new sub projects is HISTORY!!!!!

Some insights on the KIKU-TV subs... The fonts are smaller, allowing them to place three lines of text on the screen. The white color on the fonts is also much brighter. However, it seems that the software used to place the subs is quite limited... For one, they're limited to the text being centered, and on the bottom of the screen (JNP subs could be placed anywhere). As a result, they're taking less care of covering up the Japanese text that appear on the bottom. This may upset some of the viewers in Hawaii that can read these things.

Timing - It's a bit better than JNP's subs. The three lines of text helps timing a bit more, IMHO... It allows for less breaks in the dialog. For example, three screens with two lines each can be condensed to two screens with three lines each.

Another thing (and this may be a problem for some people) is that the people subbing at KIKU-TV either can't read Japanese or they're too lazy to translate the written signs and other Japanese text.

The PLUS thing about the KIKU-TV subs is that they're more accurate. This does, however, create more text that the viewer has to read. This could actually be a problem for some people because you now have to read more, which may distract the viewer from seeing the video itself, such as the expression on someone's face. I think that's why you don't see any of the fansub groups (JTV, SARS, A.D.Clan, etc.) using three lines of text. When I watched the JNP subs, I was able to scan the two lines quickly, then look at the characters and watch them speak. I'm finding that I can't do this as easily with the KIKU-TV subs.

Overall, I think this is a good direction for KIKU-TV and Shinsengumi! on that channel.

Anyone remember these clips? The following images were captured by me during the airing of Kouhaku 2003 (2003/12/31).

http://www.jdorama.com/viewtopic.2518.htm

Because NHK owns the annual singing competition, they use part of it to showcase their up-and-coming taiga drama. In this latest show, Shingo and company appeared on stage for a minute, in full costume, to promote Shinsengumi! It's quite funny seeing them in a much lighter mood... Especially Yamamoto Koji... in the series itself, he's spending time slaugthering and torturing criminals, rather than having a laugh or two. Yuuka got a total kick out of it (she was one of the judges during the competition)...

Man, I'm glad this thread's back on top. This show's . . . man, it's the best. I watch some other shows during the week, but, I don't look forward to them as much as I do for Shinsengumi! and, no, it's not for it's boy-ness, obviously. Every friggin' show is good; it's like its own self-contained story, yet you can see how it's part of the whole as well. and, I daresay, that does make it better than a lot of past Taiga dramas.

Re Kouhaku promotion...so....what did actually happen?? x) i dun really get it....

i'd take it, "Isami" was asking Mitani and Yuuka, which group they like best so far...the Red or the White group.
but what did Mitani meant, by pretending he's writing something. and why did Yuuka laugh so much, and keep pointing on wat Mitani writes?? x)

oh, trust me! the real Kouji Yamamoto, is such a down-to-earth guy...polite manner of talk and low-profile manner when interviewed...and just soooooo niiiice!! The total opposite of Hijikata!!^^

Something I just picked up on...

I was watching Hagure Keiji Junjoha 16 ep2 last night... In the beginning of the episode, Detective Yasuura's daughter Yuka was in the house reading a book by Sakamoto Ryoma. I heard that name before, and immediately I remembered he's a character in Shinsengumi! (played by Eguchi Yosuke).

So I searched around the 'net to learn more about him. I found a really good link covering Sakamoto-san:

I remember learning about Sakamoto and the Meiji Restoration in my Japanese history class. A definite driving force in the modernization of Japan.

Well, the "other" NHK taiga dramas were great...

but...

Do they have their own line of court shoes????????

Found this on eBay... I'm wondering if these are even official NIKE/NHK gear?

More information on the shoes... They're NIKE Air Sabaku (is that a Japanese Michael Jordan??? LOL!) Go to eBay and search for "shinsengumi nike" and you'll find them. They're selling for US$85 a pair.

I've just checked, but there's not the release date there ...
Maybe it's not related to the Taiga Drama...

Will Shinsengumi be added to the drama list? I noticed Musashi, and Toshiie to Matsu are listed but not this one so far...

The series is still running... For Musashi, it was added to the DB after the series had already ended.

On a different subject... Isn't anyone watching Shinsengumi!? Just curious because, for a currently running series, this topic is quite dead.

I'm also enjoying the story itself. It's really interesting! Mr Green
