Sorry for the confusion. JTV being the fansubs online. Not an actual station.

When Good Luck was broadcast in LA (KXLA?) it was subbed, but the JTV fansubs are much better than the broadcast shown in LA, because of the video quality (it's widescreen and I think also a DVD rip), and the subs themselves are better.

Yup definately those were DVD. Usually depending on your TV reception and capturing method you can get the raws on TV to come out good too. Of course an HDTV rip is pretty much as good if not better than a DVD rip Big Grin

Are any of the local independents like KXLA or KSCI (both LA) or KTSF (SF) broadcasting in HDTV?

I would be very surprised if the smaller local channels have invested in HDTV at this point.

KTSF has a digital signal at 480p

I agree. The smaller mom & pop shops will be the last to join the ATSC* bandwagon. Even if the digital content is currently available from their Asian counterparts, some of these stations will have a slow and costly process in obtaining the technology to broadcast the stuff. Also, the stations would have to broadcast both the analog and ATSC signals in parallel for quite awhile until a very large majority of their customers have done the upgrade. Keep in mind that there are still a double-digit percentage of people out there that are still watching TV off of bunny ears (antennas for you kids). That means a single TV station's broadcasting budget will double (FCC fees, on top of other expenses).

*ATSC is the standard for HDTV in the United States, Mexico, Korea, and any other places I may have left out. ISDB is used by Japan, and DVB is used by the rest of the world. Very important to know this if you're shopping around for a HDTV PC capture solution.

True, but in major metropolitan areas, most stations already have a digital signal in addition to the current analog. For example KTSF broadcasts in 480p. It will probably be the case that smaller networks will choose the low end of the digital spectrum. They will not have the budget (or even the programming) to invest in higher resolutions (720p or 1080i) unlike the major networks.

Since it sounds like you're on top of things...do you know if they're still planning on, and if so WHEN, forcing the stations who go HDTV to give up their analog signals back into the "pool"?

I know at one point they had talked about that and were going to force the big networks to give up their analog channels (2006 or so, if I remember correctly, last I hear - but that was QUITE a while ago I heard) once they went digital so that there would be more spectrum out there for the public to use.

Last I heard the deadline was 2006. But I believe it has been pushed back a couple of years. It's the catch-22 situation: stations don't want to lose the analog signals until everyone is able to decode the digital ones, and people don't want to invest in digital sets until the programming is upgraded.

Interesting. We got Good Luck subbed here in LA. I thought we all got similar shows (albeit at different times sometimes and/or not at all) but using the same source so if S Cal was subbed so would N Cal. I guess that's not the case after all.

unfortunately, we don't get the same shows subbed as LA does.
it would be nice to watch Trick up here. Grumble

Thanks for the info. By any chance have you heard anything about extending the digital tuners beyond over the air (OTA) signals? It's nice that tvs will be equipped with the tuners built-in, but how good is it for cable boxes or satellites? (which is how many people currently view hi-def signals)

oh, i'm already aware that Trick 1-3 is up on BT and ABMJ. Trick 1 and 2 are probably from my copies (just divxed versions).. hehe

I just wished that they would air Trick up here with subs so i can capture it myself. Trick 1 was a VHS rip, Trick 2 the subs were iffy, as for Trick 3 that was done by Haruspex (and BMWracer-which i already have his version).

It would be nice to have someone in LA capture and post the Korean dramas in HQ. Mr Green but i know i'm asking for too much. rofl

Yeah. I know what you mean. I'm still waiting for Churasan 2 to air here (if it ever does) since it already made it to Hawaii... I'm not really holding my breath...but who knows...since it was only 6 episodes and Churasan 3 was only 5 , maybe they'll put them together and air them together (I can always dream right?).

Next up!

"Last Christmas" featuring Oda Yuji and Yada Akiko

http://jdorama.com/drama.838.htm

Starting next Sunday night, the 14th of November, in the 10pm time slot on KTSF.

Of course that means no subtitles... but I figured that there was so much discussion of this show on different threads, it was worth a mention.

Ahahaha whoa we're getting this here! Nice! Don't worry about the subs, Studio Oto has been working on that Mr Green

Since they're airring it here, maybe I can convince some Japanese friends to follow it and get an additional translator for it Big Grin

Elton,

You're already working on subbing "Last Christmas"?

Very cool!

Rule of thumb; How long does it take to sub a series once you have the raw episodes? 6 weeks? 6 Months? A year?

I really have no clue. And once I watch it, you know I'll be hounding you for the subbed version.

Has anyone heard anything about the series that has replaced Sakura? I recognize Sata Aiko from Love and Peace but dont know the main character.

How long will the Matsu Takako series run at 8:00 pm? I think its been pretty interesting so far.

Hahahaha, it all depends on the translator and how much time I have to time the subs etc. If I really get on a roll, then I can do about a new ep every week provided I have all the translations ready for me to work with. Right now qoogirl, the translator said she's almost done with ep 1 and eps 2 and 3 are about 70% finished so I'm aiming at a d-addicts release next week, hopefully. No guarantees though hehe

Ultimately I like to average 1 ep every 2 weeks Big Grin

I liked Sakura too. It doesn't seem like too many others liked it though...I think we're in the minority...
