I got one in Australia from some brand called zensonic.

It does everything dvd vcd mpeg divx xvid jpegs etc.. Also the firmware can be upgraded to new codecs as they come out.

For less than $200 aussie dollars I think its one of the best buys I've made in ages.

Also the player has a built in file browser so I can burn all my divx files onto a dvd and play the ones I want.

I don't know of any that do...but it's just a container (at least for the video - video is Xvid I think) so it's probably not that hard.

Does anyone know if the Phillips unit runs a flavor of *nix? My LITEON player runs Linux, and has inherited the file handling limitations that come along with it (I wrote about this earlier in this topic). The version of Linux it uses is more of an embedded/KIOSK build.

I'm wondering now if there are any projects at Sourceforge or other places that are designing an open-source based DVD player operating system?

I just bought RJ Tech's RJ4200 DVD player , based on recommendations from many people and its low price ( I saw some web sites that sell it for $120 range, but got mine for $80 ) . I haven;t given it an extensive test yet, but so far it is fabulous. I'm not very tech-savvy as some of the other people on this tthread, but I can tell you what I like about it so far. It is all region, PAL/NTSC, sounds great, and is VERY easy to use. No tinkering ios necessary to change regions. It autmomatically reads it and plays it. IT has PAL /NTSC converter. Great picture. And a bunch of other stuff it proclaims on the box that I can't understand. Like I said, I'm a techno-newbie.

I would like to recommend this player(RJ TECH RJ 4200) for people,, who like me, don't know alot of technical things and just want a good, realiable, straight -of-the-box ease of use player for not that much moolah. Looks pretty good too

Morning,

I have a question if anyone can I help. Yesterday I bought Ju On 2, yet it won't run on my computer (my only source of watching movies). My Computer is set to Region 2 DVD's so thats not a problem, and my DVD's that are 1 & 2 Regions have no problem playing. Any suggestions?

Hmm certainly sounds like a weird problem to me. Well first thing is to maybe try at a friends house or something or some other machine to see if the DVD plays just to make sure the DVD isn't defective. Or maybe try using another software DVD player to play it. Also does your DVD drive read the DVD as in it sees that there is a DVD in it when you put it in?

As another alternative, do you at least know anybody with a Sony PlayStation2?

Exactly what did you buy? Is it a burned DVD-writable disc? You can tell by looking at the data side of the disc. If the color is anything other than silver (green, purple, blue, etc.), you have a DVD-writable disc. The reason I'm asking is because some sellers are selling burned copies of DVDs. It's very hard to tell looking at the label side because of the photo printers out there that can print on DVD discs. Some DVD players can't read a certain type of DVD-writable (DVD-R or DVD+R). Something to double-check.

I bought an original Ju-On 2 off eBay, with shrink-wrapping and original box. My copy is also region-2, but it has a silver color on the data side, so I'm positive it's an original pressed DVD. And, it plays fine in my region-free DVD player.

Mizune - Region 2's will not work in PS2's from the states, unfortunatly >.<

groink - I bought it directly from the store, un-used. Cost me quite a bit of yen but I felt it was needed.

Either way, I appretiate all the help but I have found something that runs it. It's called Cyber Link, and I set my computer to region 2 with some program I downloaded, so I'm all set now. I just need some magic subtitles..... Grumble

Yeah, but I was thinking:
a) if there are other gamers from the US, there is a liklihood that they have had their PS2s modded to be region-free (like my bro), or
b) they just bought one in Japan

Gundam, I'm sure not all of us are lucky enough to save for things like DVD players, or for that matter, have our parents get them for us....

I've bought a Philips DVP 630 and I'm soooo happy!!! Now I can see my AVI files on my biiiig TV color... why should this be illegal??? Downloading a DivX file can be illegal, but not see a AVI file on the TV... am I wrong?
I know Philips had problems with the EU because of the Divx players... I don't know the details, but Philips had to go out of EU to make its Divx players: probably major labels considered selling Divx players was a way to promote piracy... But it's just nonsense! I just want to see my files on my TV!!! Bang Head
It's Divx 3.x, 4.x and 5.11 compatible... I just love it!! If there's something not working I just use my Dr Divx and everything is ok...
You know, there are soooo many different codecs and standards... Divx players are just a way to create order out of cahos!! Ahah!
