Xavio: nah, it's not as if you can ALWAYS see lava flow. and as i mentioned, it was just luck that i went there the same time as a really great one was going on. and it's always only on the big island of hawaii. (not oahu, where honolulu and waikiki is).

it is VERY dangerous there. as i was mentioning, i was astounded that they didn't have a perimeter set up around the flow. the flow was moving (very slowly), and if you tripped on the lava rocks (night or day - it's quite easy to do), and fell in, you probably would incinerate in seconds.

Ok, i was thinking that there are several "vulcans?" in Hawai and that you can often see lava flows.

Hehehe... Just before 8am this morning, there were several jets flying through the leeward section of Oahu. Scared the bejesus out of me!!!!! I soon remembered it was the memorial exercises.

A few interesting things... One, my dad once told me the stories about the Japanese forces flying through Kolekole Pass... At the time he was living in Wahiawa, just outside of Schofield Barracks. One of the airplanes flew about fifty feet over his head, heading for Pearl Harbor and Hickam Field. Minutes later, he could see the clouds of smoke coming from the south.

The other interesting thing... The building I work out of (Makalapa) was once the morgue for the more than 2000 soldiers that were killed in the attack. About a year ago, a Navy inspector came to my office wanting to perform a fermeldahide (sp?) test. I said WHAT????? And then he told me the story... That's some creeeeeeeeeeepy s**t!!!!!!!!

The Man: you bring up an excellent commemorative point! lest we forget -- let's not repeat the past. groink, didn't know you work at makalapa, dude! i'm right across the street at pearl. i used to have to do stuff at makalapa and the 15mph limit just drove me crazy.

they said that there are plenty of ghosts on pearl harbor (but i don't believe in any of them). and even more at ford island -- and we're moving there soon!! if i see any of them, i'll let you guys know (and then i'll also be a believer). perhaps i'll try some evp (electronic voice phenomenon). someone mentioned it in a thread at d-addicts.

google it, and you'll find out what it is. i can't bring myself to believe in it.

We DO, but, yesterday was Dec' 7, and this is a Hawaii thread . . . is why I mentioned Pearl Harbor day.

I AM part Japanese; I've heard the personal stories of Manzanar, et al. Some of the saddest tales that come out of there are the unpublished ones. And, I'm an American. I had relatives who fought the fires at Pearl.

Maybe on the date when the authorization of Japanese-American internment was rendered, something can be mentioned. I know the date (02/19/1942). Do you?

And since this particular topic HAS been started, let's not forget the Italians-Americans and the German-Americans and other U.S. citizens unjustly interned as well in the 1940s. Those groups have not [yet?] received blanket reparations or apologies.

And GO FOR BROKE, 442nd Regimental Combat Team and 100th Battalion WWII vets! And the World War II Filipino vets -- only recently being honored -- from Hawai'i! IMUA!

I don't think BMW was attempting to question your sincerity or the validity of what you wrote.

FYI, I am someone whose family was actually interned in Manzanar. Though I don't know the exact date they had to report. I know the stories of before and after.

unfortunately, the wahine vball team awesome run ended at the ncaa tournament w/ a loss to the wisconsin badgers. after losing the first two games of the match, the wahine were able to bring the badgers to a decisive game five, but couldn't overcome the deficit.

in any case, they went a lot farther than anyone could have predicted for them (undefeated regular season). they fought hard and made us proud. congrats to the badgers, but we're still proud of our girls!

Need some travel advice.

If I'm interested in:
1. Hanging out on a beach all day not crowded with tourists
2. Boogie boarding and surfing
3. Maybe a little hiking with tropical scenery
4. Good restaurants to eat lunch and dinner

What's the best Hawaiian island to vacation?

I'm not Hawaiian, but I'd guess Kauai or Maui would be at the top of that list... At least it was when I was last there ('96)...

I'll agree with 'racer in the sense that those two islands have less of the hustle and bustle of Oahu (Honolulu IS the 11th largest city in the world, from what I understand).

To me (and this IS a biased opinion), the best island with EVERYTHING is Oahu; I mean, two of finest people on this board alone live there -- The Man and ahochaude . I love this 'aina (land).

Besides . . . if you no visit Oahu, how you going meet us, bruddah?

By the way, I, too, am not of Hawaiian ancestry. But, I'm all local, li'dat.

In any case, Hawaii's perfect if you want to get away to great scenery, cleanliness (I don't think I ever woke up a day living here and ever complained about the climate), and a wide variety of food and, shopping, too, I guess (judging from friends from all over when I took 'em to Ala Moana or Waikiki, they found stuff they thought they'd never find unless they looked online) . . . we sorta' have no amusement parks and NO gambling.
