funny you should mention that. in hawaii, we have a tradition of hugging one another (except male/male) when we meet or say good-bye. i notice that with some of my japanese friends (from japan), they were very uncomfortable with it. even when they see everyone else doing it as a custom. i guess i should have expected that since i've never seen it happen in jp!!

Terryb: glad to hear it's a custom in the netherlands as well. it's just what you're used to growing up with. i can understand if you've got some sukebe guy hugging girls, grabbing their buttocks, and going for some cheap thrill - heck, i wouldn't want any female that i know hugging anyone like that either. but we're talking about a quick, friendly hug amongst friends.
what's really ironic?? if you walk the streets of japan, you've got all these guys macking on chicks trying to get them to work at bars, they've got sex mags and porn EVERYWHERE ... but if you approach them, arms extended, for a friendly hug, they've got this WIDE-EYED death stare, like, "what the heck do you think you're doing???"

This thread is really interesting. What you say sounds very weird to me. We are so different

Not very often, except maybe when you are really really happy to see the person again. Arabic person hug each other in France sometimes.
Or people hug each other, but not when they meet or saygoobye, just for fun.

Even if you are friends? That's a little bit surprising to me...^^ In Germany it's very common to hug friends, when you meet them or when saying goodbye. I thought it was common in France too...

it surprises me too. i've never been to france, so i only know what i've seen on tv. it seems like people hug each other, kiss each other on the cheeks, and stuff? no? well, that's what happens when you've got media controlling your perception of the world.

Yes, people kiss each other on the cheeks ( 1,2,3 or 4 kisses). ( everyday, when we meet a friend)
Then we don't hug each other everyday. In the media, people hug each other every 2 minutes. The reality in a little bit different

yes, i guess that makes us quite different. if i understand it correctly, even the guys will kiss each other on the cheeks, right? in hawaii, if you saw anyone kissing each other on the cheeks, we'd know immediately that they come from a different culture. no one does that here. the hug is perceived as 'safer'.
