Social acceptance is another story.
I've been wondering about that for awhile. What are the expectations of Japanese people/society on marriage and pregnancy? Is pregnancy before marriage a severe breach of Japanese social conventions?
I remember when the Japanese hostages were released from Iraq. In the US, they would have been on Leno, visited the President, and written best-selling books about the ordeal. I read a news article about how the Japanese press and many of the people blamed the Japanese volunteers for going to Iraq and "causing" the problem, thus shaming the country. The hostages' parents had to make public apologies, and they were in seclusion after returning home. As such the responsibilty for the incident is placed differently in Japan than, say, the US.

In France, I'd say that 70 per 100 of the people have children before marriage ... and most of them just NEVER get married !! My brother has a girlfriend for 10 years , they have a 3 years old daughter and they don't want to get married . It's not rare at all .
And nobody judge them !

For ppl looking for their Hirosue Ryoko fix, go look for two japanese movies, name 'Poppoya' and 'Hana and Alice'. She has a small part in both movies but its better than no Hirosue Ryoko. Another thing, dunno whether its mentioned in this thread but I just found out her name is pronounced 'hirose'. Got it from making of Moto Kare.
Poppoya is an incredible movie. I absolutely love it, the music, the way it is filmed, the main cast (and yes, I still wonder if there's ever a time without snow in that village). Ryoko's part is small, yet quite interesting, and she and Takakura Ken really have the right chemistry in front of the camera.
Though, gotta keep in mind that she was somewhere around 19 back when it was filmed

I watched Poppoya without knowing anything about it and found it to be a good movie. My favourite scene is the one where the son of the poppoya's best friend gives him a call.
My favourite Hirosue Ryoko movie is Himitsu. Its the type of movie that's the opposite of korean melodramatic movies. It takes a far fetched premise and uses it to explore situations and is very thought provoking. (not that I don't enjoy Korean melodrama)
Another movie I've seen with her is Collage of Our Lives. Would have been a good movie if not for a lame sequence at the end that really turned me off.
Anyone got any news of any of her movies/dramas coming up? IMHO, she's one of the best japanese actresses out there.
She was pretty good in Wasabi, with Jean Reno. She even learned all her French lines phonetically and the scary thing of that is... it sounded better than my French and I had ot for 3 years in school lol.
I also liked her in Episode 33 of Musashi. She kicked ass there.
Collage of our Life was... she was great, he annoyed me. He was so useless.

She's supposed to be in a new drama soon, her first since Motokare. If I find that information, I'll post it here, though I think it's called "Slow Dance"

Actress Hirosue Ryoko (photo, 24) made her first public appearance in 18 months yesterday. The last time she appeared before the media was to announced her wedding to designer-model Okazawa Takahiro (29) in December 2003. She was also several months pregnant at the time. Yesterday's event was to promote the upcoming Fuji TV Monday night drama series "Slow Dance." Hirosue, who seems to have lost quite a bit of weight, will star alongside popular actors Tsumabuki Satoshi (24), Fujiki Naoto (32) and Koizumi Kotaro (26, son of the prime minister). Popular weather girl Kobayashi mao (22) will make her dramatic debut in the series.
