I have no idea what to do. I got a job offer after they put me through crap. The higher paying job I wanted isn't calling me back and won't let me inquire about status. I have another interview on Thursday somewhere else and I don't know the pay. Hiring processes take too damn long. I'm just afraid of accepting the lower paying one then getting a better offer when it's too late. I think I might just have to take it because nobody else is returning my calls
It's your trial by fire: a test of patience...
The higher paying job, should be able to give you some kinda time frame... That's bad business to keep someone hanging like that... Maybe that says something about the company, ne?

It is rude. But maybe it's just me who thinks this is becoming a norm instead of a hated 'sometimes it happens' kind of thing amongst companies that hire? They're horrible at contacting people back.
Speaking of bad companies, went again to get my check in the morning...no one could give it to me...it was locked up still with the keyholder MIA. I was just kind of annoyed before, now I am starting to think they're all full of kuso. If they know this is a problem, why won't they make a 2nd key? They can't be that stretched for money. If they knew I was going to come back, why not be prepared for that?
If I didn't need the money, I would be a lot more rude about it. This is just ridiculous now.

Like you, I'm cynical: I think it's the norm... They're in the driver's seat, so they jerk you around.

It is ridiculous. Isn't there a higher-up you can complain to or is the company knee-deep (like some of my past jobs)?

I talked to the boss the first day I went to go pick it up.
This time again, "Oh, she's not in her office right now so you'll have to come again," says random secretary. I guess I have to start announcing to a secretary that I'm coming to get paid???? Otherwise Ms. XYZ disappears, keys and all.
Their excuse, I'm guessing, is that they're only a 1 yr old company. That's more than enough time, to me, to get your act together.
In other depressing job-related news, my sister found a job looking for a Japanese-English translator who has a high level knowledge of kanji and spoken Japanese, lives nearby (I do), and has at least a GED. What the, that's me?! But I have to move 2hrs away to finish my BA. I am tempted not to.

Almost every company I've been dealing with has been the same way. Even ones that sent me assy offers that I rejected. You call for status and nobody knows who to speak to, or they tell you "If we want you, HR will call you. If not, we don't. You just have to wait". The higher paying job told me I'd have to wait until May to be eligible but they interviewed me last month anyway. My point is, if you want me, say so ahead of time. If I have to wait till May to start, fine, just tell me in time so I don't take lesser offers in the meantime. It's not like I have a bad record nor am I overly aggressive to the point of getting on their nerves.
yume, I've had that happen at my job too a couple months ago. We get paid on Thursdays. I never work on Thursdays, so I have to make that trip. They screw up pay so much that I do not want direct deposit, so I have to go and get it. I work 20 miles from home, so it's not exactly convenient to go up and get it. I don't always make it in by 5:00 because of traffic (office people leave at 5:00), plus we have staff coming in and out 24/7 as my job does not close. They told us all several times "If nobody's here, the checks are in the drawer, take it and sign for it". So, I've done that. One day they just decided to lock the 2nd shift checks away for the weekend Night shift checks were in there, but not 2nd shift. I was sick too, so it was a pain for me to go get it.
I called around to find out what was going on. Someone else called my building and talked to my lazy ass boss at the time, Sister C., who is gone now, they sent the nuns away She was like "Sister E. has the keys, she locked them away this time. But she's down the shore for the weekend, can you come back tomorrow or just wait till Monday?". Nuns have no idea about the real world or money, I swear. I said "Well, I'm not putzing all the way back here, if you have the check tomorrow, call me, then I'll come". I'm thinking that if she wouldn't be back until Sunday, how would you have my check tomorrow? Yep, that's right. Your fat ass is too lazy to get the keys from another building on the campus. So, she calls me the next day and says I can come pick it up and says "Make sure you get here by 4:30 because we have to pray at that time, so you'll be here in about 15-20 minutes right?" What a moron, I live 20 miles away and it takes an hour, she knew that. So I get there and she gives it to me and says "I've had this in my hands since 7:00 last night, I got it just for you because you needed it so badly!". I was like "Why didn't you tell me before I went home that you were gonna get it last night????". I hate nuns. Especially old, fat, lazy, busy-body ones.

.......F work
my new manager is clearly prejudiced,
im the only non indian person left at my job, and i think thas only bcs the owner of the store likes me alot, and he'd be pissed if the manager fired me.
he even gives the newer (male, indian) employees more hours than me.
and they always totally ignore me unless, they need help with something.
i want to quit so bad, but first i have to find a new job.
which is pretty hard since when im not at work im busy doing sum type of bull shit.
but next week i may have time to do sum searching

KS315, take what you can get for now, if the higher paying job comes through, jump ship ASAP.

Finish your BA, yume. Getting your degree is so important to today's market. There will be other jobs in the future, other opportunities, prepare yourself and think positive.

Guh. Looks like the chain of incompetence ripples all the way to the top. Yikes.

I gotta agree there. BA's now are like high school diplomas were 10 years ago. It's almost a prerequisite to everything, even many poopie jobs. Having more credentials for places that don't require so much could even get you more pay sometimes.

KS315: was gonna ask how the job hunting was coming along. hadn't seen you too much at d-add.
in any case, here's my pov's:
seems like you don't have a choice for jobs. you gotta get the one that pays the bills. i would hate to burn bridges by joining a company, then jumping ship in a month for a better job. maybe it's not so bad in philly, but here in hawaii. maaaan, this island is small.
if you have a choice, look at other stuff rather than the pay (unless the pay is REALLY bad). opportunities for advancement, medical (dental, vision, etc), 401k?, turnover rate, and their financial stability (are they going to be able to afford you in six months?).
as for the ones not getting back to you. don't think too much into it. they just have poor hiring processes and it's probably not just one individual. got some friends that work HR in some companies. sometimes, the dept makes a mistake in figuring their budget, and realize they really can't afford someone new. sometimes, it's the fact that they've made an offer to someone else (who's thinking about it), and they don't want to let you off the hook cuz if choice #1 declines, they want to extend to you. sometimes, the decision-maker is soooo busy, deciding on a new hire is not their top priority (so everything waits until s/he decides). and HR has no control over any of that. they can pressure the boss all they want, but for what? they'd get one peed off boss and the same dang answer.
but that might be good for you. think about it. let's say you're not #1 or #2. #1/2 are probably feeling the same frustrations you are, and will also accept offers elsewhere. then you get the job.
I'm thinking I'll have to take this one. I always make wrong decisions and miss out though
Oh man, you need an injection of confidence... Come on, you're a Moderator, K....
If you're hurting financially, you gotta take what's there on the table... Who knows, it might be better than you think. You can't let money be the only barometer in your selection process...

Yeah, basically I wanted to get what I wanted, so I wouldn't end up leaving too soon after. I haven't had great jobs up until now, but my first job in high school I stayed 6 months. Next, in college I stayed at the same job for over 2 years (for retail that ain't bad). Then I was a bank teller for a year. Then I did not work for a period to concentrate on school. Then I got the job I have now as a practicum to graduate. I graduated in September 2004, started looking for a full time gig in October. In 2 weeks I hit 1 year where I am now, which I didn't plan on.
But, this level of the field does have a high turnout rate, meaning, everybody quits eventually, or moves up because they had the balls to stick with it. But, a lot quit because they "care too much" and get emotionally attached to clients and just can't take it anymore because they don't have much power to help (most clients choose not to help themselves anyway so heh).

The problem with the higher paying one I wanted was that I'd have to wait until May to qualify. But that's in less than 2 weeks anyway, so I see it as, why wait before saying a word? On another note, this position had been open since November, so maybe they are picky to fill. But they were practically kissing my ass in the interview I called for status, not to know if I got it or not. I know they'd call me if I got it. I just wanted to know if it was filled or if I was cut......I think it should be easily accessible info Plus, doesn't is look good to call back and show you are interested? O__o
Anyway, that one pays $5,000 more per year than the one I am gonna be offered (waiting for the letter), plus fully paid medical, vision, and dental (meaning, no deductions....free Aetna), but MUCH less paid sick days, vacation days, and personal days. The one I'm gonna be offered would leave me breaking even each month if I'm lucky but I'm gonna have to cut some expenses and defer my student loans some more. Right now I'm living on savings that are trickling low to the point where I am having to use my credit cards a lot more often. So I probably will take it.

Well, opportunities for advancement exist but obviously not quickly, it would take probably 2 years or more for that but you can move around on the same level positions. Each year you have a chance for 3% raise. There are benefits (insurance), but I don't think they have 401k for my level. They have tuition reimbursement but the other one did too. Financial stability is there, it's actually improving from expansion. Since they don't pay as much as it is and there is a demand, it's very unlikely I'd be cut off from being overstaffed. In fact, this field (mental health/psych) is understaffed. This place is the mental health sector of a "health system" type of thing, which runs (or owns?) 5 hospitals in my area. This position is bottom of the barrel for psych new grads, but it's also where many of us commonly start. And there's ALWAYS a demand for case managers (very similar to social workers).
A disadvantage, it's kinda far from home. But that's also partially an advantage, I don't live anywhere near where the clients do Advantages: it's all highway so it's a bit safer to drive to in the winter, and I don't have to use my own car during the work day (just to get there). Advantage: for this position at other companies, many offer less pay and don't offer agency vehicles. The other higher-paying one was a different, better, and more highly-looked upon position, and it would be what I'd move up to if the position was open where I work now...so I'd have been sticking to the same thing.
I dunno, I just have been feeling jerked around and screwed over for the past 7-8 months. I found out I needed more and was qualified for more, so I wanted more. I guess I should just shut up and get my foot in the door.
I mean, see... I feel like a cave troll when I go to work. I spend most of my time in the large server room we have. I mean, it's really huge. The advantage? Well, in summer I'd say it's the coolest place in the whole city.
Disadvantage? Well, no windows for example. Then add a quite incompetent leadership, and fools who always bug us for tech support... Of course, it pays good, but I'm really considering quitting lol. Maybe after the summer trip to Japan.
Good thing is though, that the company isn't that small and our department head doesn't have that much of a say in things. I mean, the last time I had to deal with a really incompetent leadership they ruined the company and we had to shut down lol.
EDIT: 09:25 CET, now I go off to be a cave troll again...
