Obviously, there is a risk of data loss when you try to modify the partition in place. But I've heard that the newer versions are much better in keeping your data intact. So before you try, backup, backup, backup. That should be the mantra for anyone.

Ouch.. guess I shoulda been keeping up with this thread.

Ok, Partition Magic does work, but the it is awfully confusing and slow. Very slow actually. I honestly really wouldn't touch the program. Make sure you have eveything backed up first though. I've had more bad things than good things happen with partition magic.

It is always good to plan out your partitions before you install a new OS. I always suggest that you have 1 partition for simply just your OS, and programs like Word or Photoshop where you don't store any programs that you might need to backup if you ever need to reinstall windows again.

Here's an example of my main desktop computer's HD partition

C: (OS) - This is by itself so if I ever need to reinstall windows, I just clear this partition.

D: (Games Installs / Unsorted Download) - This is partition is set up so that it'll be getting the majority of the fragments.

E: (Pictures) - Pictures are very small files 150KB - 300KB, and having a lot can really tear up your system performance. So I keep these on a completely seperate partition.

F: (MP3) - 3MB - 6MB files. Off to its own partition as well.

G: H: I: (Movies) - These're huge 300+ MB files so they get their own drive too.

With this setup, I only have to occasionally defrag my C and D drive, and since I keep the capacity of the drives at 10GB, and 40GB respectively, it's a quick defrag. E - I actually suffers no defrag even they they get filled to the brim and I start to shuffle stuff around.

----------

Ok, on to DVD-Burners, currently have 1 NEC 2500 and 2 NEC 3510. I'm guessing each of the drives have done about 3000-4000 dvds each. Grrr.. and I have extended warranty on them as well.. why aren't they dying.

My TERABYTE master ... the source of most of my drama's .. dude thanks a lot for wonderfully detailed reply.

yeah i heard about partition magic, when i got my new laptop, with 2 partitions as i had asked for, so the techies told me about it, but it is good to hear from users like .

I also always keep my c drive only for OS and programs. ALL data in d drive, same reason, anything happens atleast i have all my data.

and thanks for adding the info about the dvd burners, iguess u must be having internal ones. Do i know which is a good/economical external dvd burner, something for my laptop, have been seeing all these usb dvd burners, maybe u got some info considering that u eat, sleep and burn dvd's in your life hehe

I saw that my new order has been shipped ... Dancing Dancing

Next order has already been planned Wink .. maybe will put it tomorrow Smile

No, they're just good drives. As to external dvd burners, you might want to try just getting a regular internal dvd burner, and buying a USB enclosure. That MIGHT work since not all dvd burners work flawlessly with USB enclosures.

well this is a shortcut for locking the machine. just create a usual shortcut icon with these links. i find it convenient to have it in my quick launch menu.

%windir%\system32\rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation

Think I should buy a new computer. Mine is kind of old already and I can't even burn DVDs on it. (Or so I think) Beaten

We haven't used my wife's laptop since we started using my desktop.
But yeah, I wish I did have a laptop of my own where I could take it wherever and whenever I want to. Beaten
A desktop is great, however it is too "restricting".

yeah restriction is exactly what i dont like in dsktp's ... even though they r faster than laptops of same config.

actually sometimes in good weather like today .. i pick my laptop .. go to the lake we have down near by, and then work out there ...

actually now i find it difficult to type on desktop keyboards Beaten Beaten

Going back to the NEC 3520A, I just found out that they don't read DVD-RAMS nor do any NEC burners! Kinda weird but I guess this only effects those who need DVD-RAM usage.
