Hi All,

I am half African-American and half Italian-American. I was born and raised and currently live in the USA in NY. I also have some Dutch in my family. My maternal Grandfather was half Dutch and raised in the Dutch West Indies. So that explains why I look like I came from India. Or some people come up to me and start speaking Spanish. And when people actually ask me..What are you?....I always say Black.... which is the truth. It is fun to watch their eyes flicker and see how long it takes their brains to register my answer. It isn't good to have preconceived notions of others race, or ethnic background or nationality. Whatever you are just be happy and be proud. Big Grin

I found this poll a little confusing. It asked: "What is your ethnic background? It had a category of European/American.
I am American which is my nationality but that has nothing to do with my or any other American's ethnic background. Was this poll aiming at where people live? I clicked on "other" eventhough I am American.

I have enjoyed reading everyone's answers here. Wherever we are from we all love our Japanese doramas!!! Applaud

Glad to see your post too bmwracer. So you are Chinese...or so your parents tell you? Do you speak any Chinese at all? I know in your heart you are Japanese. So am I!!!!

Did I miss dochira's answer in this poll? What ethnic group does he belong to?

Yes as someone stated earlier in this thread that maybe the Japanese viewers are posting on other boards written for and in Japanese. I like knowing that there is such a diverse ethnic group here.

Sorry I haven't posted much lately bmwracer. I have been busy since I returned from Japan. Plus I can't see "Yoshitsune" in my area and "Sakura" in the NY area has until July 17th to finish. You can always PM me, bmwracer. No problem. Smile Cus' you know you are my cutie pie!!!! Are you blushing yet bmwracer? Bonk

I don't think I posted here. I am Filipino with hints of Chinese blood. But judging from my pic, I think the Chinese influence shows more.

Hey cool, you went to Japan?? Now, I'm really jealous. Puppy Dog Eyes Naw, all kidding aside, did you enjoy your stay? If you plan to respond/reflect/share your trip, there is a "Going to Japan" thread in this forum. Let me guess, you went to see the sites from Sakura, right??

Hi dochira,

Nice to hear from you. Thanks for your response. So do you speak any foreign languages dochira? Smile

I guess you do look more Chinese dochira but then again what do I know!!! I'm black and look like I'm Indian or Puerto Rican! LOL!!
Yes I ws in Japan for a short trip. No no "Sakura" sight seeing. I went on a Tozan or a religious pilgrimage to Taisekiji (a Buddhist temple) which is in Fujinomiya, Shizuoka-ken, near the base of Mt. Fuji. This was my 9th trip. I have been a Buddhist for a long time. Thanks for the info. I will have to check out the " Going to Japan" thread.

For some reason I checked off "Notify me when a reply is posted" in this thread but I am not getting notified. Any clues?

I can understand Tagalog (Filipino), but my speaking ability is less than what I desire. But I can speak it if absolutely necessary. I also can understand (somewhat) and converse (hesitantly) in Japanese. I took two years in college and continue to further my studies through watching dramas.....essentially self-study.

Cool, so do you visit Japan often? (once a year, or more frequently)

Not sure, but if the checkbox is set and you didn't get a message for this reply, I would send a note in the Suggestions forum, under "Problems with the website".

Well, this is a board in English...

In the USA, very few Japanese watch dorama. Largely only the older people. I mean, I know a couple of ladies here in their mid to late 20s that are from Japan, and they don't watch dorama. So I wouldn't expect many to come to this board.

That's really interesting. Come to think of it, when I go to the rental store, it is mostly the older Japanese that go there. Some young ones sprinkled here and there, though.

Thanks dochira for that tip!

To answer your question dochira. I have gone to Japan at laest once a year or every other year since 1991. Hopefully I can go again this year.

That is cool that you can understand another language dochira . I studied French in high school Spanish and college and I can understand some of each as well as some of Japanese but I have a very hard time remebering verbs in all of those languages. I wish I were better at foreign languages.

In regards to the conversation you and pcmodem are having about Japanese doramas it is my understanding that they are shown in the early morning time slots on TV in Japan so that old folks and young mothers usually watch them. We are now watching the "Sakura" series in the NY tri state area. It comes on every Sunday night at 11:00PM. They show three 15 minute episodes back to back. So we have a nice group of fans over at Japn-Guide.com of all ages discussing it. So I can see why this board may not have too many Japanese participants.

That pertains to the NHK asadoras (morning dramas) such as Sakura. The "trendy" dramas are shown on different channels at night, during the 8pm, 9pm, 10pm timeslots. If you browse the "Discussions on Japanese Dramas" forum, as well as the "Buy, Sell, Trade" forum, the majority of those dramas are the "trendy" dramas.

Actually, let me rephrase that...

I know a few women from Japan in their 20s to 30s... and they watched dorama when they were in Japan, but not at all since they've come to the USA.

Yup, I don't see them rent dramas in the stores. I might be simply missing them as I enter the rental shop, I suppose.

Thank you for that info dochira. You and bmwracer are always so helpful to me. As you can see I am not always on top of things on this board. So thank you very much! I don't get any channels here that show these "trendy' dramas. Are you renting the trendy dramas in Japanese with NO English subtitles?

BTW I just got an e-mail notification from this thred. I don't know what made it change! Applaud

Just kidding around, really. There is a thread in the Drama section where people complain about dramas they didn't like... I guess every drama can't be great, but some seem to hate a lot of 'em...
