Augh, looks like my monitor is starting to go south on me... Time to get a new one.
Any suggestions? I'm looking at moving up to a 20"-21" CRT...
Sorry. I haven't been looking at CRTs for a while now. I have a 20" flat panel at work, and a 15" flat at home. I don't think my desk will be able to handle the weight of such a CRT monitor.

Flats are okay, but I think the image quality for the CRTs is still better... And I think I can get a name brand (Viewsonic, NEC, etc.) 20-incher for a mere $200-$250...

I completely understand. It is so much cheaper for the same screen size, except it's so darn heavy. I don't want to think about carrying up any flights of steps.

haha, that's like buying a new wide/bigscreen TV: it doesn't fit in the usual car
It took me years to give up my 19" Iiyama CRT, but at work they started replacing all the monitors with LCD's few years ago. I got one too last year (a 17" Samsung 172x) Now I never wanna go back to a big heavy CRT ever again

Well if I bought a TV, I'd have it delivered.

Maybe I'm not used to LCD screens, but the image and color on a CRT looks to be better, weight notwithstanding.

Hmm, it's different yes. Pictures for example can look really different on a CRT/LCD When I edit photos I still have to re-check them on a CRT. Same with webpages, colors look different too. Other than that LCD's are great, for gaming too, proper LCD's with fast refreshrates show no ghosting at all now. (it was different a few years ago
but the best thing is that it hurts my eyes less when staring at an LCD compared to a CRT. took me some time to get used to it though.

Right. I've got a photographer friend who still sticks with his CRT, 'cause he can do much better color calibrations when editing photos and making photo-quality prints...

i too am still using CRTs... The colors look richer, imo, and yes, you get to make a lot more adjustments if you want to.
mine is like 6 yrs old already but still good - its one of those 22" flatscreen NEC crts - had a hard time carrying, unpacking and setting it up coz of the weight (for some reason it seems heavier than a 32" tv)...
another advantage is that it doesnt have ghosting which is noticeable on lcds when you play fast-paced games (unless u get those <12ms lcds which are quite expensive atm) _________________

That's true, I was afraid of ghosting at the beginning. But mine does not show any: else I would have gotten me another one. I'm a bit sad though, a year ago my 17" cost me nearly $600, now it costs like only half of that. Even the 19" version is lot cheaper now.. oh well.
oh yeah, I forgot to mention: the dead pixel nightmare. Some stores/companies refuse to replace your LCD when you have less than an X amount of deadpixels. I know that it's nearly impossible to make 100% working panels, but I think it's unfair when you just paid hundreds of $$ for a monitor that doesn't even work properly. (just like with some PSP's) IMO the deadpixel guarantee insurance is just another way to make some easy money.

ah, the dead pixel nightmare ^_^
yeah, that's also something to think about...
lcds has really gone down in price... really competitive with crts now...
my crt is refurbished from tigerdirect 6 yrs ago... paid like $290 which i thought was a good deal coz at that time, aperturegrill crts cost like $1k+ new... _________________
Hmm, the more I look into this the more I'm starting to waver towards a LCD monitor... I can get a 19" Samsung for about $350 at Fry's... That's what I paid for mt 17" CRT five/six years ago...

Decisions, decisions.
i am not an expert in monitors ... but i would go for a LCD anytime .. much more convenient and less space ..
i guess if one is a normal user ... not into high end graphics or photography .. it does not really matter to that extent as to the slight difference between crt and Lcd

Yeah, that's what I've been reading... Gaming is better on a CRT, too.

If you're still hesitating just go to a shop where you can see multiple panels at display. That's what I did before buying mine, different (brand) panels give different color/sharpness and refresh rate too. I even played Unreal on my Samsung before buying (I ended up buying somewhere else (online) because it was cheaper)
SHORTCUTS for Locking and Hibernating your system - for those interested
I always find these much more convenient than going all the way to shut down the system. These r the shortcuts u can have e.g. in the quick launch menu. 1 click and system hibernated..
