this will make you feel better.

a few years ago i was in london with a few friends and we went to this chinese restaurant. one of my friends was using his chopsticks the wrong way round-i.e. he was holding them by the thin end and picking up food with the thick end! hehe

Actually, I've seen others do that: the reason being if they're grabbing food off of a shared dish (like in a Chinese restaurant) the thick end is "clean" (wasn't in the user's mouth), so the dish isn't "contaminated," so to speak... I guess it's proper etiquette. Head Scratch

yeah sometimes people do that, "wanna have a try of my dish" or something like that.

also holding chopsticks the other way around can be easier since the far end usually isn't rounded but squared = food doesn't slip away hehe

Yeah. And typically in a "family style" Chinese meal, a number of different dishes are ordered so that each person can try a little of everything... Usually, one would use the serving spoons provided, but if not, the chopsticks are supposed to be reversed... Smile

ah ok, if anybody else other than my friend was doing this then i can understand, but believe me this friend of mine doesn't do etiquette. i know he didn't have a clue! hehe

whoa, that little finger pointing strategy might get people into trouble. I've done it and it brings pretty painful consequences. I'll share if anyone's interested.
