The sort of side note that amuses the heck out of me.
Yumiko Shaku plays the English teacher the series lead has a massive crush on.
She does have a couple of lines in the show where she gives English a shot.
I have no idea what she was trying to say. No idea. And I've gone back and listened a couple of times.
Funny part? Yumiko has just become one of the hosts for a TV show called, "Let's Learn English!" http://www.nhk.or.jp/night/# where she comes on and tries to make leaning how to speak English fun.
Now I'd watch. But I don't think it would be to learn how to speak English. _________________

One of my favs;
At one point the woman who runs the local "Love Hotel" is running for Committee Chairman. In her election speech she declares, according to the subs, that everyone deserves "A Peace of Us".
Fortunately (for me), she was speaking English at the time, and what she actually said was; everyone deserves "A Piece of Ass."
Just finished viewing two Atsuko Asano dorama.
101st Proposal: I had read a lot of hype about this 1991 drama: it's supposed to be among the earliest and best of the 1990's "trendy dramas"; it was written by a prominent screenwriter, Shinji Nojima; the cast included three popular actors, Asano, Tetsuya Takeda, and Yosuke Eguchi; the messages it conveyed are very admirable; it achieved huge ratings when it was televised, higher than another significant "trendy drama" that same year, Tokyo Love Story; and it is still considered among the most popular dramas of all time among Japanese viewers today. Unfortunately, I was disappointed after watching it. The acting was pretty good, but the characters and plot left me shaking my head throughout the story. Illogical, incredulous, and inconsistent. Then there was the distraction of Atsuko Asano's physical appearance. She looked dangerously thin in this drama; I kept wondering if she was anorexic at the time she acted in this series.
Maria: A mundane 2001 series with a young-person-facing-a-potentially-fatal-illness storyline that has been overused in dorama. This was actually the second time I have watched this series, the sole reason being Asano's over-the-top, in-your-face performance as the ill person's halfsister. I was mesmerized by it. BTW, she looks much healthier in this series.

Just an awesome series. Got really trippy at the end though
You ain't kiddin'. Then it got a little bit stranger in the special. And a whole lot stranger at the end of the movie. But I loved it.

See? You can't please everybody, and everybody's reaction is different.
I absolutely loved 101st Proposal. I'd never heard a word about it before I saw it, and I'd never seen Asano's work before. But I loved the show, and I became a big fan of Asano's after seeing it.
"Maria", on the other hand was -- I thought -- a dreadful series. The script was moronic, the characters pieces of cardboard, and worst of all, I thought the director allowed Asano to embarass herself. And I thought that's what she did.
On to happier things... I finished "Stand Up" and it just got better as it went along. There was a lot more to this show than I thought there was gonna be when I started. More than I thought there was gonna be when I was half way through.

If everybody had the same opinions, the world would be a very boring static place. Having differing opinions is a healthy thing. I would be disappointed and concerned if everyone agreed with what I believe, say, or write. So, thanks Geezer for not disappointing me!
