I have lots of fam. from New Orleans. Things are a real mess down there. None of them have contacted my dad, grandma, or anyone. I don't know what's going on with them. Also, the main branch of the Institution that I work for is based in New Orleans. So as a result of the damages not only will many of the people from New Orleans fail to receive money (employment checks, welfare checks, etc) but also the people in this institution. That accounts for the medical school, the research institution, the research facility, and the cancer center. Also, as a result of that battered oil rig situation....I think that maybe fewer cars will be on the streets for a time. There are still lots of people there that need to be evacuated/rescued and...its horrible.
And just think, my dad has been offered jobs in both New Orleans and southern Florida on several occasions. Dad wanted to go every time, but mom always said that she had not so good feelings about living in either place. _________________

I've been following the news about the conditions in MS and LA. It doesn't sound good for the people there. And while I don't agree with the looting happening, I can't blame them for trying to simply provide for their families.

For the folks not from the USA, I'm not sure if they appreciate how large of a natural disaster the situation is in New Orleans.
A city of approximately 500,000 people, and over 3 times the area of the city of San Francisco (SF is 50 sq miles, NO is 180 sq miles) has been evacuated; there are still upwards of 80,000 people in New Orleans trying to get out.
New Orleans is 80% flooded, no power, no electricity, no sewage system, no phone lines, no gas lines, no fresh hot/cold water, no gasoline for cars or boats.
Roads are largely cut off by the water and even a few bridges were washed out or severely damaged beyond use.
Food has pretty much run out.
Water has pretty much run out.
The police don't have a way to even communicate with each other (walkie talkies need charging), no bullets, or no gasoline.
Due to the floodwaters and lack of sewers, cholera and typhoid will become a problem in the next few days.
In short, New Orleans has turned into a science fiction apocalypse movie.

well, i guess they justifiy it as such:
after lootling best buy for all electronics, sell the stolen goods for cash and use that to buy food. (???) _________________

Well, that is completely beyond me.
I think you are trying to make sense out of a situation that is beyond logic. A mob mentality can take over in a moment's notice in these types of events where all rhyme and reason goes out the window. Perhaps some of those stolen electronics can be sold 'hot' but quite frankly if you have no electric power. no water, no food or a place to live, then what good are most of those stolen objects.
For the most part I think these types of disasters and catastrophies bring out the very best in folks, unfortunately it only takes a few to hinder the assistance for others in need.

My positive thoughts and prayers go to your family shojou22 and all others that are living in the areas that were hit by Hurricane Katrina.
Your Mom sounds like a highly intuitive woman shojou22. Thank goodness your Dad trusted her instincts.
