Rio row leaves England in turmoil
Football Association chiefs were locked in talks with England players in a bid to quell a revolt over Rio Ferdinand's exclusion from the squad to face Turkey in a crucial Euro 2004 qualifier.

Although the squad, with the exception of the injured Michael Owen, trained as scheduled on Wednesday morning, embarassed FA officials were forced to postpone a lunch-time press conference with some of the players as the two sides remained locked in negotiations.

The talks followed reports the players had voted unanimously in favour of a strike if Ferdinand is not reinstated to the squad. The Manchester United defender was axed on Tuesday after it emerged he had failed to take a doping test at his club's training ground last month.

FA officials privately voiced confidence that the players would not go through with the boycott threat but Gordon Taylor, chief executive of the Professional Footballer's Association, warned them not to under-estimate the depth of the players' anger.

"The players don't want to walk out on England, they want to play for their country," the players' union boss said.

"They have made their views known and hope there is a positive reaction. I just feel it is becoming really difficult. It has been badly handled and there could be a stand-off."

The players have been angered by the FA's decision to sanction Ferdinand before he has been formally charged with any offence or given a chance to explain himself. A preliminary hearing in his case will only take place on Monday, two days after Saturday's match in Istanbul.

Ferdinand has claimed he forgot to provide the urine sample required by anti-doping officials because he was preoccupied by moving house on the day of the tests.

He has described himself as devastated by the decision and denied ever taking recreational or performance-enhancing drugs.

According to media reports, four of Ferdinand's Manchester United team-mates -- Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt and the Neville brothers, Gary and Phil -- plus captain David Beckham, Michael Owen, Sol Campbell and David James met FA chief executive Mark Palios late Tuesday.

After they failed to convince him to change his mind and reinstate Ferdinand, the rest of the squad voted to pull out of Saturday's match.

The vote came hours after the FA had released a statement denying that any strike threat had been made.

England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson has made it clear he did not agree with the FA's decision to drop Ferdinand but admitted the issue was out of his hands.

The FA have also come under fire from Manchester United, who have accused the governing body of breaching their own rules.

"As of today, Rio has still not been charged with an offence, and precedent suggests that he should continue to be available to represent England until at least a disciplinary finding has been made against him by the FA," United spokesman Paddy Harverson said.

Manchester United chief executive David Gill added: "We think the FA's decision not to select Rio for England is wrong for the player and wrong for the country. As a consequence, we will be vigorously pursuing our concerns about the matter in due course."

England need a point in Istanbul to top group seven and qualify directly for next year's European Championship finals in Portugal.

A player boycott would force them to forfeit the match and the chance of automatic qualification. It could also lead to sanctions from football's European governing body UEFA.

Zico faces defense dilemma
Shintaro Kano

One year on from his first game, Japan national coach Zico is finally getting his wish: away friendlies against good opponents.

Zico will have his first choice in midfield and up front (less forward Naohiro Takahara) for Wednesday's match at Tunisia and Saturday's at Romania.

But the Brazilian manager will be without his best defenders, namely injured World Cup stars Tsuneyasu Miyamoto and Naoki Matsuda. Kyoto Purple Sanga's Kazuki Teshima also pulled out, and the inexperienced duo of Mitsuru Nagata of Kashiwa Reysol and Teruyuki Moniwa of FC Tokyo took their places.

Plus, Zico will not have three of his starting four at the back--the Urawa Reds pair of Nobuhisa Yamada and Keisuke Tsuboi and Shimizu S-Pulse's Alessandro Santos--for the Tunisia game because of their club commitments to the Nabisco Cup semifinals.

For a coach who aims to improve his team by giving it as many matches as possible and letting the players figure out what works best, any time Zico cannot field his first team can be considered a setback. And time is not something Zico has to spare with the 2006 World Cup qualifers fast approaching in February and the Asian Cup to defend in July in China.

The object of the beautiful game is simple: to score more goals than your opponents. But with the Japanese never having proven prolific, it's imperative that they remain rock solid in defense, and they have not been able to do that under Zico.

It could be a psychological ploy. Or he really might mean it. But Zico has said on a number of occasions that he thinks Japan can win games by emphasizing the attack--a la Brazil.

Here's a scary thought: Zico really might mean it.

There's no doubt Zico has at his disposal the most talented crop in Japanese history. And after reaching the second round of the 2002 World Cup, they do have a certain amount of confidence they can compete

England escaped from a bad-tempered clash with Turkey to clinch their place in the Euro 2004 finals on Saturday but Spain must fight their way through the playoffs before they can line up in Portugal.

*Lucky for England to survive istanbul battle ne*

Swiss win leaves Irish eyes crying
Switzerland secured a berth in the Euro 2004 finals by beating the Republic of Ireland 2-0 with a controlled performance that stifled Irish fighting spirit.

*A hard punch for da irish football ne*
