sorry...i cant remember their japanese names....cos i read the chinese subtitles...

so from your posting , it seems like saku's two friends did not marry...and the girlfriend of Aki actually named her daughter as 'Aki' ??

Nope, Socrates in Love is the official English title for the original SekaChuu novel. As the author explains in the afterword which was written for the English version, this was the title that he wanted to call SekaChuu, but the editor preferred the current Japanese title.

doinkies hasn't bought the novel yet (I've skimmed through it in the bookstore though, and it doesn't seem too doinky). However, I can safely say this: AVOID BUYING THE MANGA! It's really, really doinky. I bought it in Japanese last year because I thought that a SekaChuu manga would be as good as the J-drama was. But I was wrong...it's horribdoinky. So don't fall into the same trap as doinkies did...buy the novel and not the manga.

why are u talking like a 3rd person? what the hell is doinky? but i kinda agree, the manga wasnt really appealing, the art and translation was superb but the setup story is kinda different but same path, its just too short, i thought there was gonna be like a tv series manga style long. im not gonna say DONT BUY IT, if you're a big fan like me, regardless the bad comments, GET IT. i bought the original jp book and this one though, i just had to collect everything with sekaichu.

Hey guys, I have a question. I haven't seen either yet, so I was wondering which one you think I should watch first. Since, the TV drama is so popular and highly acclaimed, I guess I had a feeling that if I saw it first, it would ruin my viewing experience of the film. What do you think?

I just bought and read the novel Socrates in Love, which is the English translation of Sekachu. Has anyone here read both this book and the original Japanese novel? If so, I was wondering what you thought about the translation. I read somewhere online about the plot of the Japanese book, and it said that it involved the life of Sakutaro many years after Aki's death and that he had a fiancee named Richiko. Socrates in Love doesn't have this, so was it cut out? Is the translation not completely accurate?

Actually, I think the thing about the fiancee was only in the movie, not the book. That's why it's not in the book.

SPOILER ALERT!!!

I have read a Chinese translation of the book, and watched the movie, but not the drama. The book was 'cleaner', concentrating on describing the feeling between Sakutaro and Aki. The movie put the events in 1986 (and then 17 years later), making it a bit more 'modern' than the feeling I got from the book.

Personally I prefer the book because there are less distractions. The Richiko character (Shibasaki Kou) in the movie wasn't a bad idea, but does seem a bit unfair for her. Richiko was handicapped while acting as go-between for Aki and Sakutaro, and then fell in love with Sakutaro when she grew up - however Sakutaro still has strong feelings for the long dead Aki.

The movie did not go into the relationship between Richiko and Sakutaro, and personally I found that unsatisfactory.
