Whoa! Lots of posts on Ebizo, Betsy! Great! Thanks a lot for your info and recent posts on Kabuki and Ebizo. I don't remember who posted a pic of him posing "nirami". Was that you Betsy? I love that pose!! Lovey Eyes

Do they tour overseas too? I've read posts on him performing in Paris, and you also mentioned they are gonna perform in UK. How many times do they perform each year in Japan and overseas? Would they possibly perform in Indonesia? Puppy Dog Eyes

During these special performances, there's always a ceremony, named "Kojo" (or "announcement"), in witch other actors tell stories about the actor who's changing the name, congratulate him and invite the audience to congratulate the actor either. Only on the "Shumei Hiro" of Ebizo's family of acting, there's also an moment on the "Kojo" in witch he poses and glances to the audience with his eyes crossed. This pose is called "Nirami" and, as I said before, is exclusively done by the members of Ichikawa Danjuro's line of actors.

So during this ceremony, audience may come and shake hands with the actor? I wish I could be one those people who are fortunate to watch Ebizo perform Sad Sad

Yes, I posted dozens of pic of him doing the "nirami". Here is one:

Kabuki actors usually perform 10 months in a year and takes vacation for two months (usually in august and july). But if they are involved with works outside Kabuki (TV, movies), they may spend a long time without giving a performance.
And they do not perform so often overseas. Bring a Kabuki performance is expensive, so just a few Kabuki actors give performances outside Japan. And they usually give performances in Europe or US and in a few countries in Asia, like China. Ebizo gave performances in Paris last year and his tour was sponsored by Louis Vuitton and Axia. And next year, he will give perform on UK.

No, they just applaud the actor. If you want to see the actor and ask for his sign, you will have to wait all the performances end and go to the exit of Theater to wait they leave.

I don't mean to compare, Betsy, but in terms of popularity, how popular is a kabuki actor in Japan? Compared to, say, actors that have made their way to acting through models or band?
