for you aho....

Team studies Hawaii's Japanese-Americans for longevity clues

HONOLULU -- Kuakini Medical Center of Honolulu has won a $1.5 million grant to study the genetic, diet, and lifestyle factors behind the longevity enjoyed by Hawaii's Japanese-American men.

Dr. J. David Curb, one of the researchers, said the new grant is the first to look specifically at genes that affect life span.

The researchers want to study those born in 1915 or before to see what differentiates them from ordinary people in society who die on average at 77 and younger.

A preliminary look at data shows the long-lived study volunteers had lower blood sugar and better cholesterol levels, drank more green tea and weighed less than others their age.

A team led by Dr. Bradley J. Willcox, principal geriatric research investigator at the Pacific Health Research Institute, will study some 1,200 Japanese-American men who will be over 91-years old next year.

Wilcox said about 30 to 40 percent of the men can walk up to 800 meters with no difficulty, have strong hand-grip strength and high cognitive function. He said that is "pretty amazing."

The research project's subjects will be drawn from a group of 8,006 Japanese-Americans recruited in 1965 for the Honolulu Heart Program, a study on the environmental and biological causes of cardiovascular disease among Japanese-Americans living in Hawaii

About 1,300 or 1,400 of the original group are still alive _ the oldest is 105; the youngest 85.

Curb said the Hawaii men were "very resilient." He said "they're healthy and live a long time. Just the fact that they're reaching 95, so many of them, is remarkable."

Compared with other people their age, Curb said "they're remarkably functional" and appear to have less disease.

Willcox said they're using archived data on the men's diet and exercise. "How much green tea they drink, to how far they walk, are things we want to know," he said.

Willcox said the Hawaii Lifespan Study would complement a study on the longevity of Okinawans that he co-authored.

That study showed that a healthy diet and exercise was critical to living long.

"We can get some clues from Okinawa, but the beauty of the Honolulu Heart program is its longitudinal data, collected over 40 years," Willcox said.

The Japanese-American volunteers have contributed to numerous studies on aging and diseases, even after death.

"The men have been remarkably faithful to participating in the heart program, and despite the fact that they don't specifically get a lot of return from this, I think they're doing it to help their children and help their community," Curb said. (AP)

No surprise really.

It's like all those geezers on the Dotch Cooking Show: they pretty much work from dawn to dusk, live far from the major cities, and eat very little processed foods. That's why they're still bopping along at 70+ years with no end in sight.

Ah screw this. I'm leaving the office. I'm the only dummy who came in today. I guess all those wimps are still nursing their hangover from last night's Christmas party. The office is empty and I've done all the work I can do, since it's not a business day today.
I could've stayed at home and done the laundry and cleaned the house instead of coming in..... Rolling eyes
