So far, they lead a marginal existence in the Philippine TV landscape. Probably because of the lack of promotional support and because GMA 7's jdoramas are aired on its new sister station QTV 11. QTV, being a re-branded channel (former ZOE), is still in the process of creating a good viewer base. It would take a while (if ever) Jdoramas go hyper in this part of the world. Puppy Dog Eyes

anyway, I watched Kimutaku last week in Engine. Grabehan. Timeless siya. Kimutaku's one of them Jpop stars na walang pangit na anggulo. Not like Matsujun, Kame or Jin.. I watched and rewatched and he doesn't have a bad angle at all!! And the body.. man, the body.. how old is he again?? He's so cuuuuute!! Dancing

I went into a Kimutaku downloading frenzy. I now have Pride, Good Luck and Hero.. Yes, I have Beautiful Life.. but I have yet to watch it.. Smile

I will state quite a few simple facts first before I get to my point.

I. The people in this forum have either:
a. their own computers
b. have access to computers
c. have access to the internet

therefore they(we),
a. can read, write, use a computer
b. (since this is a thread on Jdramas) can, at least, buy or download these dramas

therefore they (we) belong to the socioeconomic bracket A, B, and C.

To state my point, here are a few questions:
1. What is the literacy rate in the Philippines?
2. What is the biggest socioeconomic bracket in the country? What is their psychographic & demographic profile?
3. Do the TV networks exist for the purpose of business?
4. Does viewership rating matter?
5. Are the concepts, expressions, and themes in the series easily adaptable (and digestible) to the Filipino culture if stated in the original language?
6. Isn't TV a "cold medium" (hello sa mga Communication students dyan! Mr Green )? Meaning you can do something while watching TV. It doesn't require all of your attention.
7. Don't the actors want to become popular? (eto para sa mga ayaw mag share ng mga fafa nila..)

...hmmm...think think...

Hi to all those ppl reading this... ive already reacted to the news about Jdoramas showing the PI in another forum (tsinoy.com). In all honesty i haven't read any of the previous posts here because of my rising blood pressure at this news. dont worry ill read them later but right now i just want to rant.
First of all i feel truly heartbroken upon hearing this news. I HATE IT WHEN PI DUBS AND SHOWS FOREIGN SHOWS. filipino voices especially the ones that they chose for these dramas are super monotone --- no variation at all whatsoever. has anyone here ever watched anime that they show there at one point (sailor moon and digimon) god it was terrible!!! Another disaster was Meteor Garden it was bad enough that the acting was heinous but the voices were just horrible i couldnt even go on to finish the whole damn thing! And omg of all the dramas that they decide to show and possibly dubb is gokusen wahhhhh! theyll destroy jun (yes im an arashi fan). How could they! every time a foreign drama is on i would go out of my way to practically break the TV. yes that is how much i hate taglog dubbing. another thing the language is super ... classical if that makes sense it...dubbing an asian drama in tagalog would require a lot of peicing together, what about certain words about tradition (eg. gokuen=group date) how will they translate something like that i mean hello to literally translate certain words would kill it. VOTE NO AGAINST SHOWING ANY FOREIGN DRAMAS IN THE PI KILL ANY STATION THAT DOES <--- ignore that.
Secondly, i dont want jun and other jpop stars to become another trend in the PI, at the time that MG was still going strong u could see their faces everywhere (i should now i went there for a few days god their everywhere!) but now guess what to be obssessed with them would automatically turn u into a nerd. i dont want them to turn real talent into eyecandy either, which i think is the reason they thought of showing MG int the first place, it can't possibly be the acting since the acting was just sick'ning.
(i am almost done please hold on!
thirdly, no one can deny that filipinos can act and they do have good ideas for dramas (i personally enjoy Encantadia) so why cant they just create their own dramas to turn into the next big thing? Maybe something out of the realm of adult complex dramas (Mulat sa pusa, ezperanza, kung mawawala ka, and others ) since these can be a drag and something out of the fantasy category too (i know hypocritical of me) since the filps obviouly have the suckiest special effects not to mention the actors cant seem to make it believable enough and our specialty in makeup is quite limited to fashion shows etc. makeup for costumes to create creatures are absolutly hideous.
and while i seem to be really in the mood to type i just want to add this in: i hate it how they would sacriface a good drama and throw in love teams to make money. take for example Encantadia Mark Herras is a prick in this drama i mean he cant act for shit! let alone have the right to act in this drama, everytime its his time to be in the limelight i do have a tendancy to change the channel and hope he dies somehow so that the drama could at least regain the class it had before it aired.
phew im done im sorry if i over did a bit. i do have a tendancy to overdo it. hope u guys can get through this without sleeping. just wanted to vent out my anger and thoughts instead of turning to physically abuse everyone and anyone within 5 feet of me. ok im going to shut up now and stare at Matsujun now. bye bye

Is this survey some sort of a school project? Mr Green I was just kidding. I know this survey is just out of curiosity Victory! Peace!

Well anyway, let me answer some of your questions.

1. What is the literacy rate in the Philippines?
The rate is high. It would be 9 out of 10. People here take education with great importance.

2. What is the biggest socioeconomic bracket in the country? What is their psychographic & demographic profile?
According to this year's Human Development Report Index by the United Nations Development Program, the Philippines is in the middle socioeconomic class, placing 84th out of 177 countries listed on the report.
About the demographic, here is a link that could answer your question http://www.asiasource.org/profiles/ap_mp_03.cfm?countryid=12

3. Do the TV networks exist for the purpose of business?
Yes, I believe so. After all, they play a crucial role in the entertainment/show business Beaten

4. Does viewership rating matter?
Of course. I think it does not apply only here in the Philippines but in all countries as well. If a show's ratings is low then the so-called business of a tv station is in danger. The sponsors of that show will back out and the station will have no income Shake Head .

5. Are the concepts, expressions, and themes in the series easily adaptable (and digestible) to the Filipino culture if stated in the original language?
That would be the problem. Sometimes, there are certain words (or phrases) that will lose their true essence once they are to be translated in another language. Those who are gonna watch a certain show for the first time (dubbed in tagalog) might not notice it but those who have already watched the show (subbed, or should I say the original version? Mr Green ) before it was dubbed will notice the difference Sweat .

6. Isn't TV a "cold medium" (hello sa mga Communication students dyan! Mr Green )? Meaning you can do something while watching TV. It doesn't require all of your attention.
Wouldn't it be hard for you to understand what you are watching when you are doing something else at the same time? I'm not a comm arts or mass comm student (engineering student ako Smile ) but in my opinion, it really depends on what you are watching. For example, sometimes I do my homework while watching basketball because I can just listen to what the commentator say while writing in the paper. When there is a "show time", they usually show a replay of it so I stop doing my homework for a while to take a look at the replay of the highlight. But aside from sports show, I give my full attention on what I'm watching especially if it is a japanese anime or dorama.

7. Don't the actors want to become popular? (eto para sa mga ayaw mag share ng mga fafa nila..)
Who wouldn't want to become famous in the world of show business? When an actor is popular (and have talent of course hehe ), he gets many projects like filming movies and dramas, endorsing products and things like that. An actor who doesn't want to become famous took the wrong path in his life. It's like a suicide for his career! If there is such an actor like that then I would give him this Beat You and this Wack and finally, this Smack! just to wake him up to reality. Ooops......sorry for the violent reaction Bonk hehe

Man, you must be really fuming when you heard about this news. If you would look at the previous posts on this thread, most of their statements (or sentiments Beaten ) is almost the same as yours. It's like you have compiled all of them in a single post Mr Green . Now I'm beginning to feel somewhat responsible for opening this thread Sweat .Well anyway, this is a free country so feel free to voice out what you think regarding this topic Victory! Peace! .

~~sigh~~
i was making my point by asking those questions up there ^^^ (sort of rhetorical, pero okay may sumagot, thanks!)

do you honestly believe that "94.6% of the total population" is literate?
probably they can read and/or write a few words but their vocabulary isn't what you'd call sufficient. If you sub the dramas, it will lose the appeal of the biggest market of networks (which would be bad right?). it would be too tedious for them to read/follow the words, which sometimes would scroll/change fast. TV is a cold medium, see (kita mo), you watch TV while doing something else. Time is gold, ika nga ng cliche, forthese people who can do something else, like probably sewing round rags made out of scrap cloth, diba naghahanap buhay sila habang nanonood. Factor yun. Ang number one audience ng dos at syete ay mga moms (this is a fact). Yuppies (whom i presume ay namamayagpag sa thread na ito) are not the number 1 audience. (eto marketing and common sense naman tayo) SO kung business mo ay network, at gusto mong bumenta, serve your customer (the audience) well. Remember, kahit saang business, the customer is the boss. If you were the target audience, you'd feel the network is catering to your needs. Kaya may cable tv (which i bet most of us here have) to cater to individual, specialized viewing needs.

The story is also a very very big factor. Hindi mag iinvest ang stations kung alam nilang hindi bebenta ang drama. Recap nung sinabi ko sa taas, moms ang number 1 audience, so kung papatok sa mga nanay, yun ang ipapalabas.

I'm so sorry but I'm getting mad. Everybody's so friggin' righteous ("No don't show it! No don't dub it! Nooooooooo! Gagawin nilang jologs ang mga paborito kong artista! Walang talent ang mga dubbers, ang mga Pinoy!")

Ohhhh..the f*cking bottomline of everybody thinking like this is colonial mentality. Filipino talents are not enough, the others are always better right? (walang sasagot, sarcastic yan)

as if lahat din ng mga jdrama actors eh kagalingan at inilalagay natin sila sa pedestal. take for example takki/tackey (i like him, gwapo siya, pero sana tumanggap tayo ng katotohanan-alam kong may mga violent reactions dito) na successful sa kaniyang "pensive" and "geeky" expressions. other than that...ano pa? they also have a lot to prove, just like our actors. The dubbers and line producers too.

hmmm.. i don't want to start a debate that would result in the disparaging battle over classes. that's so gasgas already. everything is always subjective, so, what may be right for some may not be right for others. by saying that, some of you might be thinking "then why did you even bother posting?"

well.. vote na lang for the best doramas of 2005.. clickety click my link sa sig..

1. I have a blog, pero kayo (the people in this thread are the people who I want to address so ayon nga sa isang outdoor advertinsing company, "We [I] am where the market is")

2. I never wanted to start a debate (especially about social classes parang itlog-manok mangyayari dyan eh), I just wanted to state my point...which I believe, and I can't deny, was a bit long. And slightly mad. Don't get me wrong, I'm not dissing the anyone in here.

3. I just wanted to make a point. Point ---> .

4. Guapo si Tomoya.

I didn't know about that. I do watch doramas but I'm a little outdated in the Japanese showbiz scene (you know, rumors and all that kinds of stuff) Sweat
