yeah, but it also wasted the resourse of the novel. (unless the JPNese does remake of the westen book "....Geisha".

Yeah for some reason only Caucasians were allowed to portray other races or nationalities or cultures in a derogatory manner. Hmmm maybe because they held the purse strings and still do for the most part.

Hi Enna! And sorry, I don't mean to be picky on every one of your posts but, Ruriko Asaoka played Ine Siebold on NHK. More recently, none of the Japanese performers playing Japanese-American roles in Sakura spoke decent Hawaiian English. Main female characters in a Japanese TV version of the drama on the "last Chinese emperor" Pu Yi was played by Japanese actresses like Misaki Ito.
Sadly enough, people tend to get whoever is available locally. You just have to wait until some Japanese TV station collects enough money to hire Japanese directors and costume designers to do Memoirs of a Geisha IN Japan, if you want to see more Japanese performers. Or else, wait until more Japanese performers audition for roles in Hollywood, but then, not many Japanese performers support the glitterly way of Hollywood.

the problem with using those examples is that they aren't made for the global market, as Mem o Geisha is. There's no reason to find a chinese person to play a chinese emperor if it isn't meant to be seen by anyone other than a japanese audience.

that's true that's why the english in some of these dramas is so wiggedy whack...

Oooh now I see your point Uco. Yes I noticed that when I was watching the NHK Sakura TV series that quite a few Japanese were bothered by the fact that the lead actress spoke English with a British accent and there were even comments about her Japanese. So I guess everyone sees the TV shows and films that we are discussing from their own unique cultural background and viewpoint. It is always interesting to listen through another's ears , and see through another's eyes and learn from another person's distinct perspective.

Sakura is surely made for viewers in the U.S. to see. Also Swallowtail directed by Shunji Iwai was translated into Kantonese and shown in Finland and Germany, but a lot of the Chinese-speaking characters were done by Japanese performers.

At the very least, it aired in NorCal on KTSF, and in New York (which is how Enna first got started here ). I'm almost certain it was also aired in Hawai'i.

I dont consider anything broadcast here in SoCal on KSCI as being, "made for US audiences"

Without really pushing this train way off the track, I'm not certain if NHK made Sakura without an intention of it at least airing in Hawai'i. I believe it was supposed to commemorate some Hawai'i-Japan relationship.
