I'm sorry, if this has been posted before...I haven't had the time to browse the 50 pages of this thread x)

I just got an interesting fact on Matsu Takako's family.

As you all might know, Matsu's father is the kabuki superstar, Matsumoto Koushiro. And her older brother, is Ichikawa Somegorou(I like him alot!!^0^).

Matsu is born in a Buyo family. Buyo means Japanese traditional stageplay art. Her family live in the Buyo traditional house and they also have Buyo names (stage names).

Matsu have 3 names:

Birth name = Fujima Takako.
Buyo name = Matsumoto Koka.
J-Ent name = Matsu Takako.

Matsu's father has many names!! x)

Birth name = ???
Debut name = Matsumoto Kintaro II.
Buyo name (since 1949) = Ichikawa Somegorou VI.
Buyo name (since 1981) = Matsumoto Koushiro IX (after he inherited his father's wealth).

Matsu's father was a leading role in a Broadway play, titled "Man of La Mancha"...seriously, in Broadway^^

Matsu's brother names...almost the same with his father's:

Birth name = Fujima Terumasa.
Debut name = Matsumoto Kintaro III.
Buyo name = Ichikawa Somegorou VII.
Probably, when he gets to inherited his father...he'll be Matsumoto Koushiro X!! xD

Matsu's mother = Matsumoto Noriko.

Matsu and Ichikawa's older sister = Matsumoto Kio, she is also a stageplay/theatrical actress.

Matsu's family is an "onzoushi" traditional/kabuki family for generations in Japan^^

My question is....can anyone explain in detail, why do they have so many names???? xD How did it begin?? With different surnames too! I really don't get it Sweat

Well, I think I can explain this name stuff.

In Matsu's brother and father cases, they receive so many names during their careers because in Kabuki (and in all japanese traditional arts) the performers, when they reach at a certain point of excellence in their arts, they receive new names, according the tradition of their families in that art. For example, Takako's father, the current Matsumoto Koshiro, had debuted in Kabuki using the name Matsumoto Kintaro II (all Kabuki actors, when they oficially debut on stage, receive an stage name). When he reached a higher point of excellence in his acting, he received the name Ichikawa Somegoro (the surname Ichikawa probably came from the fact that Ichikawa Danjuro line and Matsumoro Koshiro line of actors were always close. Some actors of Ichikawa Danjuro line of actors assumed the name Matsumoto Koshiro during their careers). And, finally, when he reached an even higher point of excellence in acting, he received the name Matsumoto Koshiro. Matsumoto Koshiro was supposed to be the lead stage name of his line of acting, but the Takako's grandfather received another name after Matsumoto Koshiro: Matsumoto Hakuo. So, is probable that Takako's father will want to assume the name Matsumoto Hakuo II, even to give his son, the current Ichikawa Somegoro, the name Matsumoto Koshiro (if this won't happen, Somegoro only will assume the name Matsumoto Koshiro when his father dies or retires).

BTW, the name changing process is called "Shumei" and there are always special performances to celebrate this name changing, that in japanese traditional arts, as I said before, means that the perfomer grew, artisticaly speaking.

For those who wants to know more about Ichikawa Somegoro and Matsumoto Koshiro, you can try these links:

http://www.kabuki21.com/somegoro7.php(about Ichikawa Somegoro)
http://www.kabuki21.com/koshiro9.php(about Matsumoto Koshiro)
http://www.kabuki21.com/koshiro.php(about the Matsumoto Koshiro line of actors)

And I gave a similar explanation about the name changing of Kabuki actors on this page, if what I said on my previous post wasn't clear enough: http://www.jdorama.com/viewtopic.5721.980.htm
