Last I heard, Andru went searching for it in Japantown on Sunday. If we don't hear from him by the end of the week, I'll send a rescue party.

Thanks, but no need for a search party, folks (although sending a St. Bernard with a small keg of brandy would be nice!). Yes, I've returned from Nihonmachi with the missing episode!!!!

Remember that it does not have English subtitles but anyone who wants a copy can PM me. I'll trade for a couple of blank DVD-Rs in jewel cases (one DVD to replace the one I'd send you, and the other to partially compensate me for the postage, which would be around a $1.40). Of course, if you live in the SF Bay area, we could meet up in person somewhere in the city to do an exchange of one DVD or videotape.

While searching for the episode I found something "hen" about it. As I explained in a previous post, when the NHK morning dramas are originally shown in Japan, there are six 15-minute episodes per week, and the week's total of 90 minutes is put on one videocassette and numbered (usually 26 weeks total). When it is shown here on KTSF, we see two of the 15-minute episodes edited together, so it takes 3 weeks to see a whole "week" of original episodes. In the past when I've located missing (KTSF) "episodes" of morning dramas, they've always corresponded on the correct week's tape as the first pair of (original 15-min) episodes, the second pair, or the third pair. This missing episode of Wakaba, however, started in the middle of the second pair on a tape (45 minutes into the tape, instead of 30 or 60). This makes me think they may have skipped an episode before, and MAYBE the episode they skipped, possibly at the halfway point (week 13), only consisted of clips of past episodes summarizing the whole story (I seem to remember an episode like that on at least one NHK morning drama - I've been watching JTV on KTSF for over 10 years now) so by skipping it, we viewers would not have noticed anything missing. Or has anyone noticed that an episode of Wakaba was skipped before this one?

Sorry folks, I realized today that I neglected to give enough information so other people can obtain the missing Wakaba episode on their own! The missing episode was during week 18 (i.e, tape #18).

If you live in SF, you can go to the JBC video store on Buchanan Mall (that's the cobblestone pesdestrian walk between Post and Sutter in J-town). The Wakaba tapes are on the back wall on the right side (that is, after you enter the store and turn left to face the counter). They are at about knee-level on a section about in the middle of all the shelving on that wall. You'll need to recognize the hiragana for Wakaba.

I'm not sure how much the rental is for one tape for one night. I spent several dollars renting two at a time trying to find the missing episode (I first rented #15 and #16). I'm always surprised that the people who work in the store never know which episode last aired of a series that is currently being shown on KTSF, so you are on your own in trying to figure it out.

Also, I wrote up a synopsis of the missing episode(s) which I cut-and-pasted below. So this is a spoiler warning. For those who don't want to know what happened until they view the episode for themselves STOP READING NOW!

The first scene, as expected, is the last one from the previous episode where Wakaba presents her design for the couple who wants separate gardens, and the woman not only tells her to leave but that she doesn't want her to design the garden at all. Back at the office, Wakaba tells Masaya what happened, and he gets a call from the husband about the incident. They go together to the couplefs house to apologize, but then Wakaba starts saying she still thinks the whole thing is weird. She and Masaya start arguing in front of the couple who understandably become uncomfortable, and when Masaya actually starts yelling at Wakaba, the husband orders them to stop. Then he starts talking about his point of view. Back at the Chinese restaurant, there is a phone call for the aunt, who is disappointed that it is not her missing husband. Instead it is Wakabafs mom, and the aunt tells her about Masayafs marriage proposal. At another restaurant, Wakaba and Masaya are having a discussion, and he tells her he is having second thoughts about them being married. Then he says she doesnft have to give him an answer to his proposal because he is taking it back, and he walks out of the restaurant without her. Back at the Chinese restaurant, a man is lurking outside and finally comes in to ask for the uncle, explaining that he was an old friend and that he had been away on a long trip. The aunt suddenly realizes who it is. The scene then switches to Wakaba getting a call from her Mom and aunt, asking about the marriage proposal. She tells them about Masaya taking it back, and everyone back in Miyazaki are now totally perplexed.

In the next episode/second half, Wakaba is in the garden of the boarding house and Masayafs grandmother comes out for a Good Morning chat, revealing that she was having another date later in the day at the Chinese restaurant, but Wakaba suddenly rushes off to work. When Wakaba pulls up to the restaurant on her scooter, the uncle is lurking outside, afraid to come in. Wakaba pushes him inside and announces loudly to everyone that he is back. He is relieved that his wife is so glad to see him, and he starts apologizing profusely, for not only leaving but that he couldnft find his friend afterall. But his wife stops him and explains that his friend showed up while he was gone and returned the money. Wakaba indicates to the aunt she wants to talk to her about something, but the aunt tells her itfll have to be later. At the office, Wakaba is staring off in space, pondering heavily, and Masaya spots her doing so, just before she is ordered by her co-worker to get into the truck so they can leave. Back at the restaurant, Masayafs grandmother is having her date and tells the aunt Wakaba has been acting strange lately. The aunt tells her about the marriage proposal, but then Wakabafs mom calls to tell the aunt about Masaya taking it back. Later at the Groove, Wakaba is having her talk with the aunt, who tells Wakaba about her own marriage and how to decide on what to do. The dad-lookalike bartender also gives Wakaba his opinion and encouragement. Back at the geshukuya, Wakaba is in her room, again pondering heavily, brushing her hair as she remembers key conversations between her and Masaya. Her brother Hikaru comes in to invite her downstairs to have a piece of cake that Judy made for grandmotherfs birthday (itfs all part of a scheme by Masayafs grandmother). He tells her whatever she decides to do regarding marriage is OK by him. When she comes down to the living room, she is surprised to learn Masaya has been invited too. When Masaya arrives, he is surprised as well to see Wakaba there. And just when Hikaru and grandmother rush off to the kitchen and Masayafs father comes out to greet him, Wakaba suddenly stands up and tells Masaya she has to talk to him, then runs upstairs to the balcony. As Masaya follows her, everyone in the room gets all excited: grandmotherfs plan worked! The episode aired last Saturday picks it up where it ends – on the balcony.

Hey, enough with the parade already! Where are my shows? Grrr... (I'm only bitter 'cause I had to stay home and study instead of going to SF to watch the parade in person.)

Geesus! I feel like driving down to KTSF's studios and slapping them around. I thought the last few weeks of Wakaba were quite incongruous and had trouble following the plot. But it looks like they're airing the skipped episode as I type this!! Saints preserve us! Bow

It is part of my World Domination Plan to get every freakin' episode of Wakaba captured and converted for sharing... eventually. We've been a little busy at work these days. Gomen!

Oh, okay. So the parade ran overtime by a half-hour. I was wondering why IQ didn't start until almost 11pm.

No, I didn't detect any hint of that at all. In fact, I think they are portraying Judy as a rather unappealing gaijin, don't you think?

What I did think of however, is Wakaba, married, a year later, coming home early one day and finding her brother and Masaya in bed together. Now that would make it an even more interesting NHK morning drama!

Or how about Wakaba finally getting it out of her system and having a drunken fling with the daddy-lookalike bartender?

But then, since I've been watching Winter Sonata on ImaginAsianTV, I'm thinking maybe the bartender turns out to be daddy after all! The backstory can be: he sustained a bad head injury when the building collapsed on him causing amnesia, then there was a mix up at the hospital and the family was mistakenly told he had died, meanwhile a hypnotherapist programmed him with someone else's memory.

OK, I guess I've OD'd on Asian drama! Nut

Does anyone know how old Chiyo is supposed to be in the flashbacks as a child? I haven't found anything through googling...

I suppose you could call him; he's not seeing anyone right now. Wink

Well, "Egao no hosoku" ended. My roommates were sucked into it before today's episode, and one of them was VERY sad that we didn't get resolution on you-know-what. Welcome to Japanese dramas, said I.

Anyway, does this page from the official site say whether there's a real inn that was used as the Yuzuhara, and if so, what it's called?

I'll check with my Tosh tonight, how's that?

I'm going to miss it. Interesting cast.

Do you mean resolution as to whether Yumi and Reijiro were getting together and I guess the answer is no. Sad
