If you like Kisarazu & IWGP then you should definately see Tiger & Dragon. Definately one of his more polish ones and my favorite out of the 3 mentioned imho. Although currently there are only 6 soft-subbed episodes. Expect to see the same casts in Tiger Dragon as in Kankuro's previous works. I put this off for a while until recently and then kicked myself for not watching it.

will do.

Just finished Good Mourning, a 1994 dorama starring Atsuko Asano. This drama/comedy series centers around a family-run funeral business, hence the pun in the title. Some topics are treated in a serious vein--financial debt, cutthroat competition, parenthood; other topics are dealt with in a hilarious way--how to correctly put on a fundoshi (loincloth), the intimidation factor of putting on a funeral for a yakuza oyabun. Atsuko is excellent in her role as a university scientific researcher who marries into this wacky, tumultuous, funeral-business family, and the large supporting cast is equally good. Asano's father-in-law, btw, is played by Seijun Suzuki, the legendary director. The screenplay is by Yumie Nishiogi, who also wrote Sweet Home and Double Kitchen, two other excellent series from the 90's. Good Mourning is yet another example which reaffirms my opinion that dorama from the 90's in general were much better written and acted than the dorama in recent years.

I've been hearing so much about "1 Litre no Namida" so I decided to get cracking on it. After the first 3 episodes I found myself quite drawn to this dorama. My first 'encounter' with Sawajiri Erika was her role as Hotarubi in "Shinobi" - not a very memorable character. In "1 Litre" she really shines though.

To tell the truth I was particularly looking forward to the end of each episode when pictures of Kito Aya flash on the screen.

A very touching story that manages to gets to a hard-boiled cynic, such as myself.

PostPosted: Sat Apr 22, 2006 4:19 am    Post subject: Tokyo Friends Reply with quote Back to top

Ifve been watching hTokyo Friendsh. A 5 episode, straight to video Dorama. (This is the first Ifve ever heard of a Dorama going straight to video but after seeing 4 of the 5 shows, the reason seems to be the same as the straight to video movies you see in video shops. You know; we made it, we paid for it, itfs not very good and wefd like to at least try to make some of our money back.)

The main character in the series is a short girl named Rei. In the first ten minutes of episode one, Rei leaves her small town, goes to Tokyo, finds a job in a hip, wacky restaurant, finds a nice little apartment, finds a group of wonderful friends, and discovers that shefs a singer, so she joins a band and is a smashing success, and oh, she finds the love of her life. (Yup, the first 10 minutes.)

In fact, the only piece of hard luck Rei seems to experience is that a young girl with no experience as an actress, and absolutely no discernable talent, was chosen to play her.

As an actress, Otsuka Ai is a pop singer. And if she was playing a small supporting role in this thing she might have been able to pull it off. If she was doing a cameo appearance as herselfc she may have been able to pull it off.

But as the lead in the showc she sinks the series.

Okay, so why watch the whole series? Partly because I downloaded it as a batch and Ifm too stingy to dump it after all the time it took to download it. And partly because Ifm always looking for the pony under the pile.

And there is a pony in this series. Her name is Maki Yoko. (Yoko Maki to Oof-Das like me.) And she plays Ryoko in the show.

Though shefs not in the database here, and isnft even mentioned as a cast member in the show (?????!!!!!) she is, for my money, the reason to watch the series.

She doesnft seem to have done much TV, but unlike the pop princess who was given the lead, Maki has talent, and shefs been paying her dues. Shefs been in gPrincess Bladeh gBattle Royale IIh gKamikaze Girlsh gInfectionh gThe Grudgeh gTime Machine Bluesh gVeronika Decides to Dieh and gAme no Machih. The parts keep getting bigger, and she keeps getting better.

For me, getting to find out about Maki makes downloading and watching the show worth it. Ifll be watching for her name connected with any project from now on.

gTokyo Friendsh as a series? Ifve had no regrets as I simply deleted each file when Ifd finished watching it. It really is a dreadful series.
