Hi! I'm new here! I just finished watching Hana Yori Dango (Live Action), I absolutely LOVED it! Its really good and I actually cried a few times! Its really short though, only 9 episodes. The anime is longer but I havent watched it yet.
My god, the tentacles of the subpar-jdrama (Hana Yori Dango) has claimed another hapless victim. The only good point about it is it short
Anyhow there are tons of better dramas out there. And by the time you've watched a few good ones, you'll wonder how in the world did you ever like such cliche-ridden, pointless dorama that probably will spawn a sequel like some bad-tasting horror movie.

I agree with Q. HYD wasn't a bad drama at all.
Compared to Gokusen, its a lot better. The story is different and the cast did a surprisingly good job.
If they make a season 2, I hope they keep it to the same amount of episode and not drag it out.
I think i'll watch another ep of Stand Up before going to sleep.
Almost done watching Virgin Road. This one is really good. Another good performance by Sorimachi and by Kinpachi Sensei
Think I'll finish N's Aoi and Sekai no Chuushin by next week _________________
Alrite folks prepare yourself for my copy & paste tirade against HYD:
Way way overrated, the mother of all cliches. Rich kid bullies the poor kid in the beginning and fell in love with his/her target by the end. Took place in high school to boot. Wonder if the director had to pay a royalty fee to the manga artist in order to license the Hana Yori Dango title? If he did, then it's kind of stupid to pay for licensing a cliche storyline.
Now about the show, lame jokes abound remember Heminyah... Lousy acting. I'm lost for words seeing Oguri Shun sitting cross-legged like a girl while batting his eyes and grating oranges.
We all know why the show's popular, it's because fangirls/boys like how pretty Oguri Shun & Matsumoto Jun are. Have those two locked in a room bouncing a ball up and down for 9-10 episodes and there still be tons of fangirls swooning over the show.
Anyhow the sad part in all of this is we are sending the message to the producers that they don't have to write interesting, original stories. Instead just pick some lame cliche storyline and cast some pretty boys/girls and voila you got a "masterpiece".
What a slap in the face it must be to other hardworking & talented actors/actresses who may not be young & pretty to see such a lame show as Hana Yori Dango getting all the attention. Might as well get plastic surgery to look younger & more beautiful because it seems that's what the audience really wants. Why bother working hard anymore. Alright enough of my Hana Yori Dango hating but just got to get this off of my chest

the drama HYD was done based off the manga, just like a whole lotta other dramas out there. Ex. GTO. That one was also a "masterpiece"
Sorimachi and Nanako. Pair of good looking actor and actress. Also the students aren't bad looking either. The girl who played Miyabi was hot
The acting wasn't bad.
Your comment on locking up Jun and Shun in a room for 9 eps with bouncing balls You're too funny. I don't think any fan girls will be able to sit through 5 eps of that if the entire ep was all based on that.
I think another reason why this drama was a hit was for one, for those who read the manga and liked it, they wanted to see how the drama would be like and 2. For those who didn't read the manga, watching it was fun and they pretty much got the point of the story in 9 eps instead of having to read i don't know how many vol of the manga.
Well, this is my thought on it. No need to argue over dramas right _________________

word up, yo....word!
no need to argue...we all have our opinions and mine is..i happen to like it, and it was a popular one.

Just cuz it's cliche doesn't mean it can't be good. It's all about the execution, and although Oguri Shun and Jun Matsumoto aren't the best actors in the world, they were decent enough to make the show enjoyable. If you're gonna bag on this show for it's storyline, you might as well bag on all the other romantic comedies out there because they aren't very original either.
Almost done watching Virgin Road. This one is really good. Another good performance by Sorimachi and by Kinpachi Sensei
Yeah, the acting in that one surprised me. i think Sorimachi supposedly acted best in Overtime so i'm looking forward to seeing that one.
@ ilovedrama: it's good to have diverging opinions on these things otherwise we'd all just be clones anyhow, my take on HYD is that its a light and fun dorama with an upbeat comedic tone, not really to be taken too seriously. granted, its depth doesn't go too deep and yes, i do agree with ur point that it might send the wrong signals to the producers. i personally wouldn't call HYD a masterpiece, and hopefully the producers don't think they've created one , but i do think they've made plausible effort to create a rather enjoyable feel-good dorama that ppl will watch at face value instead of searching for a deeper meaning behind. your points are certainly valid so then it just becomes a point of whether you prefer to watch these or not _________________
It's cool guys/gals I know we have different tastes. Actually when HYD first came out and SARS was fansubbing it, I downloaded that stuffs religiously. Can't wait till the next episodes. But after watching a few more doramas out there, it just pains me to no end to see it rated #9 well ahead of some more original, better acting, funnier, more dramatic, sentimental doramas out there.
" You're too funny. I don't think any fan girls will be able to sit through 5 eps of that if the entire ep was all based on that." --quoted K.T.Tran
Lots of guys can sit for hours watching their favorite basketball players. I'm sure those fangirls would get the same kick watching Matsumoto Jun & Oguri Shun do the same ... which goes to explains why so many JE are appearing as main characters in doramas.
Nowadays to get a juicy part in a dorama one shouldn't start out to become a good actor but to become a popular singer. Kind of funny when you think about it since in the US movies starring popular singers tend to tank & get panned by critics i.e. like those starring Britney Spears, Mariah Carrey, Jessica Simpson etc.

While romantic comedy/tragedy aren't original they tend to have better acting/substance than HYD. Plus originality of tragedies come from how the characters played out the rest of their remainding days.
while that's indeed true...i enjoyed HYD because of it's hyperbole not because i was seeking substance or style. it's ridiculous and it's meant to be...it's filled with so many stereotypes and conventions it's obviously influenced by it's source material, manga.
jun matsumoto is no where near an being an accomplished actor so i share some of your angst (especially when you consider he's ranked #2...but that just bears out the truth of who votes most here)
i can appreciate you not liking the show in any event...but at least you know what to expect and expectations are adjusted accordingly...nevertheless in general i think the flood of "recent" manga dramatizations are hapless disappointments...kimi wa petto, nurse aoi, etc etc.
it's not like trying to watch one of my perennial "favorites," SOS, which is supposed to be a more serious treatment of a vexing, controversial subject...the acting was hideous and the writing and concept even more so.
i do agree though that many new doramas are merely vehicles to propel the rising fame of various musicians turned actors, but that trend is nothng new....that's been the case in japanese entertainment for at least 10-15 years...
My god Matsumoto is ranked #2 and you know what that means .... Expect another 9-10 eps. sequel of him & Oguri Shun dribbling a ball up/down to satisfy the fangirls infatuation
Alrite enough of HYD. I find Gal Circle kind of interesting.

I saw the first episode...kind of puzzled that a drama like this came out now and not much sooner...the whole phenomenon of Shibuya fashion is far from new (and has gone through a few evolutions in the past 5-7 years) and doesn't necessarily represent the cutting edge trendy cool that it used to in Japan. The whole "para para" thing while still having many fans i'm sure...is old news in Japan, perhaps passe if you will.
i'll continue watching it though because i thought it was funny...and nostalgic given the location of fliming

I gave "Gal Cricle" a shot once the subs came out. I won't be going back for any more. A little too lame, even for me.
I'm on the edge of my chair waiting for the subs to come out for "Busu no Hitomi ni Koishiteru". From what I've watched of the raws, this lools like it's gonna be very good. (I may have to take another shot at trying to figure out how to make soft subs hard.)
And I'm still watching "Jikou Keisatsu" as the subs come out. This thing is just a wonderful, silly, piece of fluff that keeps me smiling throughout each episode. _________________

i'm surprised then, you even watched Gal Circle...

yeah, you would think they would not make a j-drama out of it, since it is not as trendy and 5-7 yrs back, like you said.
the whole cowboy thing and shibuya para para thing is a weird combination, maybe the writers are hoping that it will cause a lot of viewers....week 1 did ok, considering how the others went. Top Caster, took Top Spot for week 1.

it'll be interesting to see where this goes....i have to admit the acting of several girls was dorky as hell, but since they're airheads it's what is to be expected. i hope they don't over do it on the para para thing:

"sore ga honto ni dassai"
some of them cute dorky airheads, but overall it's different and entertaining.
