I happened to be in the US on the very day gasoline price hit the $1 mark. The scene was quite memorable with people queuing up, begging for, and fighting over what limited supply of per-$1 gas there was at the gas stations. |
wow that is really cheap....
i recall back when i just got my license to drive, long ago....
i once got gas at 79 cents a gallon....that is unreal, ne?

Ahh... Seems our lines are crossed. The event I described happend in July 1974, a fair bit before you got your license.
Judging from the contents of forum messages I'd consider anyone above 30 'mature'. As for myself, I got my bachelor's degree in the mid 80's. Go figure.

I was having a discussion with my supplier (a Frenchman, BTW) on the prices of copper and oil. We keep wondering how anyone could survive in say, 10 years' time, when the prices of the above items (and more) would have been beyond reach of most of population. The US has already resorted to going to war for oil (Iraq), pretty soon it'll be a free-for-all if no alternative source of energy becomes viable.

dude, these crazy gas prices here, are insane...
at this rate, people will resort to riding a bike, or walking...
$50 or more a week for gas...that is just crazy..

Here in China they are suffering less because gas is a state-sponsored item, but they are also suffering more for the same reason - to minimize on the subsidy a lot of places have the electricity supply rationed. Spring and autumn is relatively OK but in summer/winter brown outs or pre-announced black outs happen from time to time.
