Drunk farmer robs woman at knifepoint of coin for payphone

ISHIOKA, Ibaraki -- A 70-year-old farmer has been arrested for forcing a woman at knifepoint to pay him 10 yen while he was drunk, police said.

Farmer Seiichi Torihada, from Omitama, Ibaraki Prefecture, has admitted to the allegations. "I wanted to use a public telephone," police quoted Torihada as saying.

When Torihada was arrested, however, he was in possession of about 3,000 yen in cash, including 10-yen coins.

Torihada opened the door of a car parked in the parking lot of a convenience store in Omitama shortly before 11 p.m. on July 31. Producing a knife, he demanded a woman inside the car hand over a coin. "Give me 10 yen, quickly," he was quoted as saying.

When Torihada went to use a telephone, the woman's friend who was also in the car alerted police, who rushed to the scene. (Mainichi)

From what I recall the number of gun deaths in the US exceeds that of a number of countries (who ban guns) combined: Japan, Sweden, etc.
